Update: 505 Games has an official statement on the problems facing Bloodstained at launch.
"We have been investigating a PS4/Xbox One issue that is blocking player progress in the game. We apologize for this bug and thank you for your patience while we investigate. The issue occurs when a new game is started before downloading the 1.02 update. After the update, treasure chests will appear in the incorrect open/closed state. Without the items from these chests, progress is blocked. Players affected by this bug will be required to restart the game with a new save in order to properly progress. We investigated a number of options to address this issue and each fix requires a new game to be started. Despite our efforts to provide a fix that preserves pre-1.02 progress, this is the best solution to avoid future issues. Xbox One players will also be affected by this when the 1.02 patch is delivered next week. Switch players who have a physical copy should download the 1.02 patch before playing."

A patch for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night pushed out yesterday created some problems with key treasure chests already being open, stopping players from progressing past certain points. At the time, it seemed like starting a new game was the only solution. In an update from the Bloodstained Twitter account, it confirmed that to be the case.
In a series of tweets from the official Bloodstained account, the studio says it has been investigating an issue with the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game that only occurs when a new game is started before downloading the 1.02 update.
This update caused treasure chests containing key items, like the Silver Bromide, to show up in an incorrect state. Basically, the game thought it was opened already and that you had the item from it. These items are necessary to get through the game, and so players were stuck, unable to move forward.
The account goes on to say that every fix they could find would require a new game to be started.

Furthermore, Xbox One players will also be affected by this when the 1.00x patch is delivered next week. Any Switch owners who get a physical copy are advised to download the 1.02 patch before playing as well. Whatever is in this patch seems to really have some odd strings tied around it, to pull all this down in one fell swoop.
In the meantime, it seems like the only solution is to completely restart, so players who might have already put in a good few hours progressing through the game and building up their favorite shards (read: me) will have to say goodbye. Those treasure chests won't be filled again until we do.
I really am enjoying my time with this game, so I've got my fingers crossed that this is the last stumbling block out of the gate. At least now I'll beat some of those tougher bosses on my first try.
