"No Current Plans" for Borderlands 3 DLC Characters, Gearbox Confirms

Four Borderlands 3 DLC packs are planned, but new characters will have to wait.

Borderlands 3 has four playable Vault Hunters, the last of whom, FL4k, was revealed last week. That will have to be sufficient for the time being, as Gearbox tells USgamer that there are "currently no plans" for more characters as part of the DLC scheduled for after launch.

Co-lead writer Sam Winkler confirmed that there are no current plans for DLC characters during a conversation in which he also discussed the story, particularly the questions it would answer from the previous games. The playable characters currently confirmed for Borderlands 3 include the aforementioned FL4k; Zane, an operative related to Captain Flynt; Moze, a gunner driving a mech called Iron Bear, and Amara, who can summon ethereal fists to smash her foes.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford previously hinted that the team would prefer to put its resources into the existing characters. He tweeted back in May, "We are focused on the main game for now, but my feelings are that it might be better for us to put our time into expanding what the existing vault hunters can do and how interesting their future growth is instead of adding new ones to start over with. Data seems to support this."

Borderlands has added DLC characters in the past. Borderlands 2 also launched with four characters, then subsequently added Gaige and Kriege in later DLC releases. With that in mind, more characters aren't out of the question.

Gearbox currently has four DLC packs planned for Borderlands 3 that will be available via a $30 season pass. They will include "new stories, missions, and challenges" on top of the current campaign. Gearbox has a history of supporting the Borderlands games long after release, so expect a lot more where that came from.

Borderlands 3 will be out September 13 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. You can find our previous hands-on impressions here.
