It was a long time between Borderlands 3 and its predecessor, but it seems like the wait paid off. 2K announced today that Borderlands 3 is the fastest-selling game in the publisher's history, setting several records during its launch window.
In a press release from 2K, the company announced that 50% more players purchased Borderlands 3 in the first five days of launch versus its predecessor, Borderlands 2. It's made Borderlands 3 the fastest-selling game in 2K history, as well as the highest-selling PC game for 2K in a five-day window. Additionally, more than 70% of people purchased the game digitally in that five-day window, and 2K says the Borderlands franchise has now generated more than $1 billion in net bookings.
Borderlands 3 has done a pretty good job of launching the franchise back to the front of the loot-shooter pack. Though it's a lot more of the same Borderlands you'd expect, it seems that's what some people are looking for. That doesn't mean Gearbox's gun-stravaganza hasn't adapted to the times, though; there are already limited time events planned for post-launch.
As players start to wrap up the campaign and dive into the endgame of this new Borderlands, it looks like from the outset, Borderlands 3 has been a pretty big financial success. This could mean a lot for Gearbox and 2K moving forward, though I can only hope the next step entails reviving Tales from the Borderlands in some form.
