The first expansion for Borderlands 3 is going to involve cunning, wit, guile, and probably a lot of shooting while numbers ramp up. Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot will be Borderlands 3's first piece of campaign DLC, centered on the plunder of a derelict space casino.
The setup is that one of Handsome Jack's space casinos seems to be ripe for stealing, and as a Vault Hunter you make a good crew member for a motley crew being assembled by Mad Moxxi to nab all the treasure. It's apparently personal for Moxxi, as she claims to have made the designs for the casino. With Jack long gone due to the events of Borderlands 2, it's time to take it back.
Both Hyperion security and other forces, like some rogue Claptraps, seem to stand in your way. But the reward is Eridium, cash, and new Legendary loot to soup up your Vault Hunter with, so the tradeoff seems okay. You will need to have progressed to Sanctuary 3 in the story to play the heist though, and the DLC will scale to your level no matter when you play it.
Unlike previous Borderlands games, the third has been aiming toward seasonal content as well as large expansions like this, in an effort to fight Destiny and The Divison's evolving versions of loot-shooters. Borderlands 3 is still a decidedly Borderlands game though, for all the good and not-so-good that entails. Most of its launch was embroiled in public disputes and some shady messaging around review copy, however.
The glitzy Moxxi heist is "coming soon," according to Gearbox and 2K's announcement.
