Branching Narratives: Kelley Gilmore on Leading the Studio That's Reviving BioShock

Plus, the one thing you don't know about Sid Meier.

In Episode 6 of Branching Narratives, Jeff interviews Kelley Gilmore, who spent nearly 20 years at Sid Meier's side as an executive producer at Firaxis Games before signing on to lead Cloud Chamber Games, the studio behind the upcoming BioShock revival. She talks about her roundabout journey to gaming, leading a studio tasked with reworking a major franchise, and much more [Download Link Here].

Gilmore never expected to have a career in games. "If I had known in college that my career would be in video games, I would have cried my eyes out," she says. Nevertheless, she has come to deeply appreciate the games in the course of more than two decades in the industry. In particular, she speaks of the thrill that comes with getting in on the industry at what amounts to the ground floor, when PR for a major developer could be handled by a couple sisters running their own company.

Beyond that, Gilmore discusses day-to-day challenges like motion capture in the age of COVID; the responsibility Cloud Chamber has to actively pursue diversity, and the early days of Firaxis Games. She also offers a little insight into what it's like to work with Sid Meier, the founder of Firaxis Games and one of the key figures in gaming history, and why he remains so dedicated to game development to this day.
