Buying Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One Gets You a Free Series X Version "When Available"

CD Projekt Red says the game will support Microsoft's cross-gen "Smart Delivery."

Today, CD Projekt Red just made its most significant commitment to next-gen consoles yet. Though Cyberpunk 2077 is currently only slated for a console launch on current-gen hardware, CD Projekt Red says that it will embrace Microsoft's Smart Delivery, meaning that when—not if—Cyberpunk 2077 comes to the Xbox Series X, Xbox One players won't have to purchase another version of the game.

CD Projekt Red tweeted the announcement of Cyberpunk 2077's cross-gen compatibility on Xbox shortly after Microsoft released a new post from Xbox head Phil Spencer detailing the feature. This is both the first time CD Projekt Red has made a firm commitment to releasing a next-gen console version of its highly anticipated RPG and the first time a third-party developer has hopped on-board with Microsoft's Smart Delivery.

With Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red has previously said that it could be a cross-gen title for Microsoft and Sony's upcoming consoles, but has also told investors not to expect a next-gen release around the time of those consoles' launch.

Last month, Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed from an April release to September, pushing its launch much closer to the Holiday 2020 window for both the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5. CD Projekt Red's CEO Adam Kici?ski has talked about how the studio expects its devs will crunch over the extra five months of development time, but the company hasn't alluded to the delay impacting which platforms Cyberpunk 2077 will launch for.

Microsoft says that all of its first-party releases for the beginning of the Xbox Series X's cycle will be cross-gen with Xbox One hardware, and Phil Spencer has emphasized that the company hopes third-party developers and publishers will also use Smart Delivery to make cross-gen Xbox One and Series X titles a one-time purchase for consumers.

Cyberpunk 2077 is slated to launch on September 17 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It will also be available via Nvidia's GeForce Now streaming service on the day it launches and is confirmed for a Google Stadia release.
