Today during Geoff Keighley's new Gamescom Opening Night Live keynote, Infinity Ward producer Dino Verano revealed a surprise alpha coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Kicking off on August 23, PlayStation 4 players will have exclusive access to one of Modern Warfare's new modes for the weekend: the 2v2 Gunfight mode.
The alpha will be open to all PlayStation 4 players, even those without PlayStation Plus. The alpha will feature five maps, including two newly announced ones: Docks and Speedball. The maps are small in size, and rather than customizing your loadouts, in the mode you get random weapons to use against another two-person team. We played Gunfight mode back in May, and again at a recent multiplayer reveal event for the upcoming shooter. It's a fun, hectic mode that's a nice change of pace to traditional Deathmatch.
Previously, Infinity Ward announced that Modern Warfare would be getting a beta in September. Early access to the beta commences on September 12 for people who pre-order on PS4, while an open beta for PS4 starts on September 14. A beta testing cross-play functionality also kicks off at an open capacity across PC, PS4, and Xbox One on September 21, with its own early access for people who preorder on September 19.
