Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's Multiplayer Has More Launch Players Than Any Other COD This Generation

Going back to Modern Warfare seems to have worked out.

In case you wondered if the Modern Warfare suffix still carries some weight, Activision announced today that 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is already the series' most successful launch of the generation.

The metrics, as laid out by Activision, are hours played, hours per player, and average daily players within Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's first 50 days. According to Activision, Modern Warfare's numbers in each category surpasses each of the last six years' worth of Call of Duty games.

At over 500 million multiplayer hours played and nearly 300 million multiplayer matches, that's a whole lot of Call of Duty. It's also not terribly surprising. Despite its narrative shortcomings, the multiplayer of Modern Warfare is pretty solid. Having cross-platform play surely doesn't hurt for its multiplayer numbers, either.

Infinity Ward is addressing the map issue as well. Some of the maps in the new Modern Warfare aren't fantastic for various game modes (looking at you, Piccadilly Circus), so an influx of some Modern Warfare classics is coming today. Vacant is back, as well as the original map of pure chaos, Shipment. I'm already getting intense flashbacks to running in a circle and throwing frag grenades as soon as I spawn.

Even though competition was slim over the past few years, this year's Call of Duty certainly feels like a return to form for the annualized FPS series. Whether this tapers off over time or not, we'll see.
