On today's Night City Wire stream for Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red kicked things off by promising a "one more thing" reveal. Said announcement actually came mid-show, and it's cool news for anime fans: CD Projekt Red has teamed up with the acclaimed Studio Trigger to create Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an animated series that's heading to Netflix.
Edgerunners won't be an adaptation of 2077 so much as an extension of the world that CD Projekt Red is building on top of Mike Pondsmith's original Cyberpunk tabletop RPG. It will be "a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future."
Studio Trigger, best known for creating Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia, is involving its top talent on the project. Trigger's CEO Masahiko Ōtsuka appeared on the Night City Wire stream alongside Hiroyuki Imaishi and Yoh Yoshinari, who will respectively serve as the leading director and character designer for Edgerunners.
"I've always loved cyberpunk as a genre, but always found it difficult to create as an original work," director Imaishi said in a new press release about the collaboration. "This is why I'm very excited to be working with CD Projekt Red on this project. It won't be easy to please both game and anime fans, but I love a challenge, and I'm looking forward to the production. We'll do our best to meet and exceed expectations."
That's not the only well-known talent involved with Edgerunners. On Twitter, CD Projekt Red's Radek Grabowski has revealed that longtime Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka will handle the series' original score.
This marks yet another animated show based on a game that's headed to Netflix, following the success of the Castlevania animated series and plans for more shows, including one based on Cuphead. However, it'll be a while before we see Edgerunners, as it's planned for release in 2022. Still, with the game launching in November of this year and CD Projekt Red saying its multiplayer is more likely come after 2021, people will probably still be playing and talking about Cyberpunk 2077 when Edgerunners premieres.
