CD Projekt Red Apologizes For Not Showing Last-Gen Cyberpunk 2077 Before Launch, Offers Refunds [Update]
The studio says it will be working on several updates to tune up the last-gen version.
Update [1:25 p.m. PT]: CD Projekt Red's decision to offer last-gen console players a refund for Cyberpunk 2077 appears to have kicked off its own set of issues. VGC reports that customers on both PlayStation and Xbox platforms have been denied refunds for their digital purchases of the game in spite of CD Projekt Red's instructions to handle refunds with the respective platform holders.
USgamer has reached out to Microsoft, Sony, and CD Projekt Red for comment. We will update this piece if we receive a response.
Our original story follows:
CD Projekt Red has released a statement on the rough state of last-gen console versions of Cyberpunk 2077. Less than a week after launch, the studio is apologizing for not showcasing last-gen versions before Cyberpunk 2077 launched, and offering refunds for those dissatisfied with the current state of the game.
The new statement starts off with CD Projekt Red apologizing for not showing the last-gen console version of the game prior to launch. "We should have paid more attention to making it play better on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One," says the statement from the studio's leadership.
CD Projekt Red says it will continue to fix bugs and improve the overall experience; it's currently planning an update in the next week, and the team is planning for two large patches in Jan. and Feb. 2021. "Together, these should fix the most prominent problems gamers are facing on last-gen consoles," the studio says.
"They won't make the game on last-gen look like it's running on a high-end PC or next-gen console," CD Projekt Red says. "But it will be closer to that experience than it is now."
For those who don't want to wait, however, CD Projekt Red is offering a refund for those who are displeased and don't want to wait for the updates. Digital owners can pursue a refund through PSN and Xbox, while boxed versions can be refunded through stores where the game was purchased. If the latter is not possible, you can contact CD Projekt Red directly, starting today up until Dec. 21, 2020.
Cyberpunk 2077 launched last week following multiple delays and reports of mandatory crunch at the studio. It received a mixed critical response, with various takes on its story and settings, but unanimous agreements on its overabundance of bugs. Last-gen consoles also encountered a number of additional issues, as users lampooned the state of Night City on a launch PS4 or Xbox One.
Next-gen versions are still expected for Cyberpunk 2077 sometime next year, though it's still playable on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S due to backward compatibility. Those versions have seemed largely smoother and much closer to the PC experience.
