CD Projekt's Next Big Project Could Be Set In Cyberpunk Universe [Update: CD Projekt Responds]
Though three studios are all on 2077, no comment on further-out projects.
Update: In clarification to this story, CD Projekt sent us a statement confirming the three studios are working on Cyberpunk 2077, specifically.
"We currently have a total of five teams working on a number of projects, with three focusing on the development of Cyberpunk 2077. These include CD PROJEKT RED Warsaw and Kraków, who are handling the main game, as well as the Wrocław studio, where around 40 industry specialists are engaged in technology R&D. A separate, dedicated team at the Warsaw studio is handling the development of GWENT. The final team is Spokko, which is currently working on a yet unannounced mobile project."
When asked about Nielubowicz's quote regarding CD Projekt's "next big project" being Cyberpunk-related, CD Projekt provided no comment. The original story follows below.
CD Projekt Red may be surging ahead with Cyberpunk 2077, but it seems that isn't the only Cyberpunk being developed at the moment. In an announcement from CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński today, the studio confirmed it was working on three Cyberpunk titles including Cyberpunk 2077.
There is the "main game," and "two more," being worked on by three teams total, alongside a team on Witcher card game Gwent and an unannounced game by mobile developer Spokko. Vice president Piotr Nielubowicz also said—via Bankier—the next big game they'll be making will be set in the world of Cyberpunk.
"Our next big project will also be in the 'Cyberpunk' universe," says Nielubowicz. "And we're already working on it and treating it as a really big and innovative project for us."
This new project seems positioned to be on the same scale as large CD Projekt Red role-playing games like Cyberpunk 2077. Whether this is a separate story or somehow interlinked with 2077 remains to be seen, though it is supposedly set for a 2021 release should rumors from earlier this year hold true.
As for Cyberpunk 2077, we'll learn more at this year's PAX West, where CDPR notes they'll be showing a new piece of the game. In the meantime, we've learned it'll have more romance than The Witcher 3, though sadly it seems that won't extend to star cameo Keanu Reeves. Darn. If you want to learn more about how Cyberpunk 2077 is shaping up, check out our interview from E3 2019 about life paths, Witcher comparisons, and even more Keanu with the game's quest director.
Thanks, Nibel.
