Civilization 6 Makes History With New Season Pass

Civilization 6 Makes History With New Season Pass

For the first time ever, the 4X franchise is getting a season pass.

Civilization 6 feels like its time has passed. The game was released in 2016, and received the series standard two expansions, Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm, in 2018 and 2019. If anything, fans were likely expecting a move toward the next entry in the franchise in 2021 or 2022.

Instead, 2K Games and Firaxis have announced the New Frontier Pass, a collection of six bi-monthly DLC releases. For $39.99, players will get access to all the DLC, which encompasses new civilizations, leaders, and gameplay modes. Anyone who purchases the New Frontier Pass will get Persona Packs for Teddy Roosevelt and Catherine de' Medici. These packs offer a new model and background for those leaders, alongside updated agendas and gameplay bonuses.

The first DLC pack in the season pass will be the Maya & Gran Colombia Pack, launching on May 21. The pack will include the Maya and Gran civilizations; leaders, buildings, and unity for each civ; and the new Apocalypse game mode. The screenshots and video also point to new disasters like meteor showers, comets, and forest fires. The next release is coming in July, focusing on Ethiopia. This pack will include a civilization, a new leader, a new district, and the Secret Societies game mode.

The New Frontier Pass is currently slated to end in March 2021 with the sixth pack. None of the releases beyond the Ethiopia Pack are detailed at the moment, though Firaxis is clear how many civilizations, leaders, and gameplay modes players can expect. Firaxis is also providing free updates to Civilization 6 between each paid DLC release. These updates will include more maps, scenarios, and balance updates.

It's an interesting move to add some new life to Civilization 6 four years out from release. As I noted before, it's unprecedented in the franchise's history, where full expansion releases have been the norm. Perhaps as Firaxis continues to improve Civilization 6, it will negate the need for an all-new Civilization. The New Frontier Pass is available on all Civ 6 platforms, including Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC, Mac, and Linux. Mobile will come at a later date.
