The classic tactics series Langrisser is getting an overhaul for modern consoles. Langrisser 1 and 2 will come as a packaged deal, remade for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam.
Published by NIS America and developed by Chara-Ani, the strategy role-playing game series is similar to Nintendo's Fire Emblem but handles battles on a greater scale. Individual commanders can carry army units from various types, and these units carry forward if they survive through a battle. However, there is permadeath, so you'll still need to be a little careful with your favorite commanders.
Over two decades since the first Langrisser, these two stories are getting remade with new visuals, reorchestrated music, and some quality-of-life improvements to bring them up to modern strategy-RPG standards. They look to have all the anime cutscenes and tile-based warfare you'd expect from the genre, but carrying with it the legacy of one of its oldest progenitors. It's neat that we'll get the chance to play these on a modern system, especialy considering how often they get overshadowed by the likes of Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics.
Release is currently set for early 2020, which we'll likely get more clarity on as we get closer to the end of the year. Even though my heart is set firmly on Fire Emblem: Three Houses for the near-future, it's good to know that down the line, there will be a new strategy game with some classic legacy to it that I can really dive into on my Switch.
