A new Cooking Mama game recently launched and un-launched in a confusing state. Today, the creators of the Cooking Mama series Office Create released a fairly strong statement on the matter.
In a statement on the Office Create site, Office Creates responds to the "unauthorized" release of Cooking Mama: Cookstar by Planet Entertainment. A U.S.-based publisher, Planet was licensed by Office Create to develop Cookstar for the Nintendo Switch.
Office Create's statement says the quality of Cooking Mama: Cookstar fails to meet series standards, and that despite being "contractually obligated" to correct a number of deficiencies, Planet Entertainment proceeded to launch Cookstar without Office Create's approval.
Things get dicier, as Office Create goes on to say that Planet "and/or its European distributor" had been promoting a European release of Cooking Mama: Cookstar on PlayStation 4. Office Create says it has not licensed Planet, or anyone else, to make Cooking Mama games for the PS4 and the studio itself has not been working on a PS4 Cooking Mama game either. Office Create notified Planet of a termination of license on March 30, 2020 due to "intentional material breach of the license contract," yet Planet has continued to advertise and sell the unauthorized Cooking Mama: Cookstar.
"Office Create is evaluating all legal action against Planet to protect our customers, intellectual property rights and the Cooking Mama series," Office Create says.
However, Cookstar appeared and then disappeared on the Nintendo eShop, with a smattering of physical copies trickling out to retailers. The official Twitter profile for Cookstar attributed this to the whole world being "upside down with delays," and that Planet Entertainment was anxious to make a digital download available.
I haven't had a chance to try out Cooking Mama: Cookstar myself, but judging by the handful of reviews that have popped up, that's sounding like a good choice. Despite Cookstar's quality though, a physical version might end up being a valuable item for collectors; the NBA Elite 11 of cooking games.
