Sadly, You Probably Can't Hook Up With Keanu Reeves in Cyberpunk 2077

Sleeping with NPCs does not seem to extend to digital ghost Keanu Reeves, unfortunately.

Keanu Reeves being revealed as a character in CD Projekt's upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most pleasant surprises of this year's E3. And not just any character, but a central role from the Cyberpunk tabletop series: Johnny Silverhand.

At last year's E3, CD Projekt Red released minor details about Cyberpunk 2077, like how Night City has six distinct regions, or how the player's customizable character V can have romantic relationships with NPCs. So following the reveal, I had one very pressing question: Can you have sex with Keanu Reeves in Cyberpunk 2077? Today in a sitdown interview with CD Projekt Red quest director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, I had that question answered. Or at least, sorta did. In a roundabout way.

So, Can You Bang Keanu Reeves in Cyberpunk 2077?

"Well, the relationship between V and Keanu is a complicated one," Tomaszkiewicz says. "As we mentioned in the demo, Johnny is basically seen in the game as this digital construct of a personality. Right? Johnny himself, he's a character from the original 2020. And you know, if someone followed the original stories, there was the story of Firestorm where Johnny apparently died. So it's kind of a mystery of what actually happened with him. And in our game here he emerges as this personality construct with whom you interact throughout the game. And these and Johnny's relationship changes as the story goes on. But of course I would rather not spoil too much."

The short answer I gather? Probably not. After all, in today's hands-off demo we got a chance to see digital force ghost Keanu in action. Surprisingly, he's a lot more prominent than I anticipated; initially expecting his role would be more like a celebrity appearance in Call of Duty.

There's a great GQ profile I thought of immediately upon the reveal, one that has the line, "Every generation has its own Keanu Reeves, except every generation's Keanu Reeves is this Keanu Reeves." And it's very true: from Bill and Ted to The Matrix to John Wick, Reeves always resonates with a large audience. And now, he's hitting a new generation with video games too.

On stage during Microsoft's conference, Reeves seems enthusiastic about the role, whether he was just being performative about it or not. He even formally announced Cyberpunk 2077's release date, complete with an emphatic "check this out" and weirdly dramatic gesture to the stage's gigantic screen. The John Wick and Matrix star, and by extension the very lucky Cyberpunk 2077, stole the spotlight at E3 2019. And sadly, we're probably not gonna be able to bone him in a video game. So it goes.
