Spike Chunsoft announced a new survival RPG for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita today. The title is called Zanki Zero and is made by much of the team behind the fan-favorite Danganronpa series. The staff includes Danganronpa series producer Yoshinori Terasawa and Danganronpa 2 director Takayuki Sugawara.
Zanki Zero follows eight survivors trapped in a post-apocalyptic world. Given the team involved and the title - "zanki" means "remaining lives" - you can guess that most of the cast will probably die.
"God created the world in seven days. It only took one day for humans to destroy the world," says the game's synopsis from Famitsu (translated via Gematsu). "Until yesterday, every day life was sinking into the sea. We do not yet known the broken world and the reasons left behind there. An earth where ruins drift about. Buildings, houses, light posts. Cars, traffic lights, asphalt-. Modern civilization was destroyed, and became ruins drifting in the sea. New ruins drift one after the other before the protagonist, who lives on one of those ruin islands."
The character focus changes with each chapter of the game and it looks like the protagonists may age over the course of the game. It also sounds like Zanki Zero will be a more active game that Danganronpa, with seamless transitions from exploration to battle and strong action gameplay with attack evasion.
The game is currently 10 percent complete and there's no Japanese release date. That means we'll be waiting quite a while for it. In the mean time, Danganronpa V3 is coming West on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita on September 26, 2017.
