Dark Souls 3: Farron Keep - Defeat the Stray Demon

Tread through poison and pledge loyalty to a wolf.

This walkthrough will guide players through Farron Keep in Dark Souls 3. We will help you traverse the poisonous swamp and extinguish the three flames needed to unlock the far gate. Along the way, you will also have the chance to join the Watchdogs of Farron Covenant, and defeat a Stray Demon. Follow our steps to navigate the toxic marsh and reach Farron’s undead legion.

The Farron Keep swamp is highly poisonous, with deeper sections that slow your movement. To prepare for the slog through the swamp, bring along some Purple Moss Clumps to alleviate poison build up, and equip armor with as much Poison Resistance as possible. Some enemies in Farron Keep will also inflict Curse damage, but it may be better to avoid these creatures altogether.

Farron Keep contains a few small islands of safe ground where you can recover from the swamp’s poisonous effects. The key to navigating the swamp is careful maneuvering between these safe ground sections. Along with valuable collectibles, hidden in the swamp is the Old Wolf of Farron who is the key to joining the Watchdogs of Farron covenant.

The swamp is littered with many collectibles, so in this guide we will not be explaining the locations of every single one. Many of them are in open areas without landmarks, making it difficult to describe. However, we will reveal the locations of most of the collectibles, and inform you of some important ones that we found.

Access to Farron Keep begins at the Farron Keep Bonfire, at the base of a long ladder opposite the Crucifixion Woods. Head over to our Dark Souls 3 Road of Sacrifices Walkthrough if you need help locating this bonfire.

Extinguish the First Two Flames

When trudging through Farron Keep swamp, your goal is to extinguish the flames on three altars, in order to unlock a door on the far side near the perimeter. We will guide you to the first two altars on the way to the Old Wolf of Farron. After a quick detour to battle the Stray Demon, we will return to the swamp to extinguish the last flame. If you wish to find all three altars first, then simply skip our section on defeating the Stray Demon when the time comes.

Starting at the Farron Keep Bonfire, head out towards the swamp. For the purposes of this guide, we’re going to assume that looking out over the swamp from the bonfire is north. To your left (west), immediately around the corner, you will see several gooey slug-like creatures protecting a collectible. Picking up the collectible will award you with a Ragged Mask.

Heading around the corner to the right of the bonfire (east) leads to a Purple Moss Clump on a corpse near the wall, which can help with the journey ahead. Brave the poison of the swamp to snag Iron Flesh if you wish, then return to the bonfire room.

Continuing along the path west of the bonfire, run across the poison sludge onto the small island with a fire surrounded by crucifixion crosses. In the west corner, a collectible sits in isolation. You will have to run out into the swamp. Don’t worry too much about being poisoned. Simply equip an armor set that has high poison defense and sprint out there to collect a Titanite Shard.

Head back to the island. Now make your way across to the other island in front of you, avoiding the sludge creatures. In front of this island, there is another island to the left containing Prism Stones. Feel free to use these if you feel you will get lost.

To the right is an island with a fire. Behind the fire on the right island is another Titanite Shard. Next to the shard is a staircase. Before going up the stairs, turn around and head out into the swamp and collect the Estus Shard sitting at the base of a destroyed tower.

Make your way up the stairs and fight off the two enemy Ghru. To the right is a bowl of fire sitting on an altar. Extinguish it, and the flaming tower above will go out. In the cut scene, a large stone goblet will be lit with fire. Two more goblets sit around a massive stone door, but they will remain unlit. Your goal is to light the other two.

Facing the bowl, you can either go around the right, or through the archway to the left. If you go to the right, prepare for an enemy to ambush you. If you go through the archway, collect the Rotten Pine Resin from the corpse just ahead, then proceed down the left path.

At the base of the path run to the island with fire. Head towards the island and then, after a few feet, head to the right to find a Titanite Shard. Pick up the shard and head to the aforementioned island. Be careful though, because an enemy awaits you. He is tall, fast, and has the ability to jump and grab you, dealing a huge amount of damage.

Proceed to the next island and pick up another Titanite Shard on a body next to a giant tree. Head up the stairs in front of you, fight the enemy at the top, collect the Purple Moss Clump, and extinguish the flame at the altar. Watch the tower flame go out, and a second goblet will light at the large stone door. Going forward, you will come across a bridge with three enemies guarding the Keep Ruins Bonfire beyond them. Watch out for the purple smoke these enemies emit.

Defeat the enemies on the bridge and rest at the bonfire if needed. Continue down the path and you will see the giant stone door and the goblets you have been lighting. To the right is a tower with a gang of slugs inside protecting an Undead Bone Shard. Behind the tower you will see a large building with three slugs surrounding a ladder.

On the island to the far left with the fire is a Titanite Shard. Around the corner of the large building you will find Wolf’s Blood Swordgrass, and on the island nearby you will find a Sunlight Talisman next to a bowl of Estus Soup.

When you’re ready, kill the slugs back at the long ladder, and climb up the ladder to reveal a bonfire and a harmless giant wolf. You have the option of praying to the Old Wolf of Farron, which gives you the Legion Etiquette gesture, and the opportunity to join the covenant.

Joining the covenant grants the Watchdogs of Farron insignia. You can deepen your relationship with the covenant by giving the Wolf’s Blood Swordgrass to the wolf in prayer.

In the same room with the wolf, you will notice a collectible located high above you on a corpse hanging off an open ledge. In order to get it you will have to walk up the stairs to the outer balcony and strike an illusory wall. Pillage the corpse to receive Dreamchaser’s Ashes. Remember to bring these ashes to the Shrine Handmaid later. This will upgrade her stock, and may also bring Sirris around to liking you. Further along the balcony on the outside of the building, kill the Crystal Lizard to gain Twinkling Titanite.

Detour to Defeat the Stray Demon

Back in the room with the wolf and bonfire, step on the elevator switch and go up to the top of the building. Prepare to face the Stray Demon that awaits at the top. At this point, we are going to explain how to defeat the Stray Demon, and collect the items nearby. If you want to continue forward through the swamp to the next bonfire, head back down the ladder and skip down a few paragraphs to our section titled Extinguish the Last Flame and Reach the Perimeter.

The Stray Demon wields a massive club and has a far reaching swing. The demon will run at you, and occasionally tries grabbing you. Don’t let this happen near the edge of the bridge, because after he crushes you in his hands, he will throw you off the edge to your death. The Stray Demon also shoots boulders out of his mouth. When you see the demon take a deep breath, be ready to dodge the incoming boulders. Simply role in different directions to avoid them.

The Stray Demon is quite slow, so we found staying behind him rather effective. Just be aware of his movements and back away from him when necessary. The demon does not transform, so you will not need to worry about any changes in his attack patterns. Take your time, and he should come tumbling down.

Once defeated he will drop a Soul of a Stray Demon. This soul is perfect for transposition back at Firelink Shrine. Bringing the soul to Ludleth will allow you to buy Boulder Heave and Havel’s Ring from his inventory.

In the distance you will see the High Wall of Lothric. At the end of the bridge, in the direction of Lothric, pick up a Greataxe and two Ember. The other end of the bridge is in the direction of the Undead Settlement.

At the end of the bridge on the right is a break in the wall that allows you to jump down to a narrow ledge. Follow the ledge around to the other side. Ahead of you is a dead dragon; the same dead dragon you may have seen beyond the pilgrims at the Undead Settlement. Near the dragon are two Crystal Lizards, a Lightning Spear spell and a Dragon Crest Shield.

Heading up the gravel towards the portcullis, another Crystal Lizard lies in wait. Killing the Crystal Lizard may be rather tricky, because it will scurry up the stairs, bypassing multiple enemies. To return to the wolf room you can jump down to the other side from atop the gate.

Back at the bonfire, you can warp back to Firelink Shrine and give the ashes you found to the Shrine Handmaid. Afterward, talk with Sirris. She will allow you to call upon her by using her summon signs, and will offer a new gesture.

Extinguish the Last Flame and Reach the Perimeter

From here, we suggest traveling back to the Keep Ruins Bonfire. Head down the ramp and straight into the swamp, right of the giant stone door. Look for a cave that sits in the far corner of the area in order to gather collectibles.

While running in the swamp, try avoiding the large enemy ahead and defeat the frog-like Basilisks on land in the far left corner. Be careful not to get cursed by these enemies. They will leap on you and spray a cursed smoke from their mouths. The cave is nearby. Defeat the Basilisks, and head toward the cave.

Two corpses nearby each hold a Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier. Some Repair Powder sits outside the cave entrance, while the cave itself contains a Golden Scroll and a chest with an Antiquated Dress, Antiquated Gloves, and Antiquated Skirt.

If you walk through the swamp and around the side of the cave, you will arrive at some stairs. If you ignore the stairs and keep going, you will loop back to the Farron Keep Bonfire. Doing so allows you to find some desired collectibles, including Iron Flesh and a Purple Moss Clump, assuming you didn’t collect this clump earlier.

Starting back at the Keep Ruins Bonfire, head into the swamp to the left of the giant stone door. Defeat the enemies nearby and make your way to the far wall where a giant Crab is prowling around. Defeating the crab grants a Lingering Dragoncrest Ring.

Several collectibles sit where the crab prowled, including a Gold Pine Bundle, Ember, and a Soul of a Nameless Soldier. Look for a pale white tree with several collectibles at its base. Pick up the items to receive 2x Young White Branch, and Crown of Dusk.

Follow the wall until you arrive at a shore. Multiple sleeping enemies reside there surrounded by mushroom-like creatures. Pick up the Sage’s Scroll and continue around the corner of the wall. You will be met with three giant Elder Ghrus surrounding a collectible.

Defeating these giant Ghru can be quite challenging while trudging through the poison swamp. Try luring them away from one another to face one at a time. If you defeat the three Elder Ghru, you can collect the Pharis’s Hat and a Black Bow of Pharis from where they were huddled.

Continue hugging the wall and it will eventually loop you back to the beginning of Farron Keep. Now we are ready to extinguish the last flame. Travel to the Old Wolf of Farron Bonfire. Go down the ladder and kill the enemies. Face the swamp ahead, with the ladder to your back. Straight ahead you will see an Elder Ghru in the distance, patrolling a section of the swamp. The way is paved by interspersed fires.

Run straight across the swamp, following the flames until you reach stairs. You may need to defeat the lone Elder Ghru in order to get through. Once up the stairs extinguish the flame on the alter. After the cut scene, the giant stone door will be open. To the left of the archway beside the altar, collect the Homeward Bones from the corpse near the crucifixes. Now is the time to rest at a bonfire if you need to.

When you’re ready, proceed through the giant stone doors. The fastest way there is from the Keep Ruins Bonfire. The doorway leads to a path aligned with candles. Head up the left path. A Corvian Storyteller is at the top. Kill him as quickly as possible as to prevent him from alerting the resting enemy Corvians below. Go back down the path and pick up the Shriving Stone along the wall. Kill the remaining enemies if you wish.

Continue forward and you will arrive at a clearing. Look carefully to observe Darkwraiths attacking some enemy Ghru. Ignore them for now, and head to the right and into the fortress to discover the Farron Keep Perimeter Bonfire.

This bonfire leads to the large crystalline lizard that guards a door which connects Farron Keep with the Road of Sacrifices. Near the door lies a Great Magic Weapon. There is a hole in the wall back towards the bonfire and it leads to Atonement and a Hollow Gem. However, if you go out through this hole you won’t be able to get back in, so plan accordingly.

Head back to the bonfire and out the door. If you rest at the bonfire, do not go out right away. Wait a few moments, because two Darkwraiths walk by to your left and they will see you if you are too far out in the open. Wait for them to pass, because when they do, they will start killing all the enemies in the area.

Once the Darkwraiths have done most of the work for you, you can either defeat them, or run by them and open the door at the very end of the stone path. This leads to the chamber of the Abyss Watchers. Have fun!

Boss Battle: Farron’s Undead Legion, the Abyss Watchers

The Abyss Watchers consist of several fighters that comprise Farron’s undead legion. However, upon entering the boss arena, the fight begins with only a single Abyss Watcher charging towards you. This foe moves briskly about the area, attacking with powerful sweeping swings, lunges, and forward thrusts. If you move away from the Abyss Watcher, he is quick to close the gap, making it difficult to pause for a sip of Estus Flask.

About a minute into the battle, another undead Abyss Watcher will slowly rise up from the floor of the arena. A third Abyss Watcher will emerge shortly after that, making three Abyss Watchers in total. Although the three undead fighters are similar in appearance, only one of them counts toward diminishing the Abyss Watchers’ overall health bar at the bottom of the screen. The other two who stand up from the ground will have red eyes, and individual life bars over their heads.

At first, the two extra Abyss Watchers may seem helpful, as they will fight each other and can distract the primary Abyss Watcher as well. However, if one of the extra Abyss Watchers falls while the other is still alive, both the remaining two Abyss Watchers will turn to attack you. Try to aid the primary Abyss Watcher in taking down both of the secondary undead as quickly as possible, so that you can have extra one-on-one time to face the single Abyss Watcher alone.

After about thirty seconds, the two secondary Abyss Watchers will resurrect wherever they fell. If possible, lure the main Abyss Watcher away from the other two, in order to avoid having to fight multiple combatants.

Once you deplete the health bar on this initial trio of Abyss Watchers, a single fighter will arise from the remains on the ground. This lone Abyss Watcher seemingly combines the essence of the other undead, causing him to be much stronger and more agile than the previous ones. This Abyss Watcher also wields an embered sword that can ignite the ground and inflict fire damage with each swing.

This fiery foe has beautiful movements that consist of swirling sword attacks and leaping strikes. Don’t pause to enjoy the beautiful swirls for too long, however, as this enemy is also brutally fast and has a long reach. Along with circular attacks, the Abyss Watcher will charge forward while dragging his sword through the ground, leaving a trail of flames in its wake. Try to dodge to the side opposite the Abyss Watcher’s sword to avoid both the flame trail and the charge attack itself.

Watch the fiery Abyss Watcher’s movements carefully. He will often perform a combination of circular swings with a final overhead leap. When you see the Abyss Watcher leap into the air, prepare to roll behind him and land a few strikes in his back. Dodging is crucial throughout the fight, so be sure to manage your stamina.

Upon defeating the flaming legionnaire, you will receive the Cinders of a Lord, as well as the Soul of the Blood of the Wolf. Return to Firelink Shrine at your leisure to place the cinders on the throne belonging to the Watchers of the Abyss, then use the newly acquired soul to purchase a rare weapon from Ludleth.

Approach the far side of the arena to ignite the Abyss Watcher’s Bonfire. The altar along the back wall will slowly open to reveal a stairwell leading to the Catacombs of Carthus, where more dangerous adventures await.
