Dark Souls 3: How to Get the Grave Key and Free Irina

Free a prisoner and find a Velka statue along the way.

This guide provides instructions on how to free a prisoner named Irina from an Undead Settlement prison cell in Dark Souls 3. We will show you where to find the Mortician’s Ashes and Grave Key needed to unlock the path to her prison cell. Irina can become a vendor where players can purchase Miracle spells and other items. Follow our steps below to free Irina from her cell and add her as a new resident to Firelink Shrine.

Irina of Carim is being held in a prison cell within the Undead Settlement. We will presume you have explored this location and are generally familiar with the area. If you need help navigating the Undead Settlement, consult our Dark Souls 3 Undead Settlement Walkthrough for further details.

When travelling to the giant tower southeast of the boss chamber in the Undead Settlement, you may recall meeting a knight named Eygon of Carim along the way. Eygon is the mace-wielding NPC who sits outside of a prison cell just before the entrance to the tall tower. The cell door cannot be opened from the outside, so you will need to reach Irina through an alternate route.

Irina’s prison cell can be reached via a locked passage in the sewers. To obtain the Grave Key that unlocks the sewer door, you must first retrieve the Mortician’s Ashes from the graveyard beyond the Dilapidated Bridge Bonfire. This is the path that constantly bombards you with spears thrown from afar.

If you have already met and befriended the giant at the top of the tower, the spears along the graveyard path will no longer hurt you. The giant’s spears will still target enemies along the graveyard path, which makes the trek for collectibles much easier.

To collect the Mortician’s Ashes, travel to the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire and head forward to the graveyard. Curve up the hill to the left through the tombstones, past the small maintenance shack. Collect the Mortician’s Ashes from a corpse at the base of a large tree.

With the Mortician’s Ashes in tow, travel back to Firelink Shrine and speak to the Shrine Handmaid. Give her the Mortician’s Ashes, and she will update her inventory items. Purchase the Grave Key from her for 1,500 souls, and return to the Undead Settlement.

From here, we will explain the various enemies and collectibles you can expect to find on your trek to Irina, so that you leave nothing valuable behind. Travel to the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire once more, and head right across the bridge into the sewers. Drop down, and eliminate any attacking rats. Continue left through the sewer tunnel, and look for a locked gate door just beyond the fog. Use the Grave Key to unlock the gate.

Enter the gate and drop down the ladder. Turn right and continue to the end of the tunnel to find a statue of Velka, the Goddess of Sin, where you can pray for absolution. Collect the Loincloth from the corpse, and turn around to continue through the tunnel passage.

At the end of the passage, turn left to collect a Red Hilted Halberd from the corpse on the elevated platform. Continue through the curved archway ahead into the next room. Prepare to face several skeletal enemies who form from the remains on the floor. These enemies are rather simple to take down, but will come alive once more after a short time. Defeat the skeletons, and loot the Soul of an Unknown Traveler in the center of the room before the enemies reanimate.

Continue through the passage, and watch out for another skeleton who forms just after you pass beneath the archway. Defeat this enemy, as well as another skeletal foe on the platform ahead. Turn the corner to the right to reach the sewer exit.

As you exit the passage, watch out for any enemies who may have fallen from the bridge above. Turn right to discover a Crystal Lizard and a pair of collectibles in the large open area. The Crystal Lizard will scurry away as you approach, so be prepared to attack the little critter to receive a Heavy Gem. The two left corpses hold Titanite Shards. However, watch out for an ambush from above when you grab these items.

Return toward the sewer exit, and turn right through the chasm. Use an arrow or another ranged attack to shoot down the hanging corpse above, and collect the Blessed Red and White Shield +1 from the body that drops.

Enter the curved archway on the left. Drop down off the platform onto the lower floor. As you approach the corpse beside the ladder, a group of rats will emerge from various holes to ambush you. Fight of the rodents, and pillage the corpse to obtain the Saint’s Talisman.

Climb the ladder and continue up the stairs to reach Irina of Carim’s cell. Speak to Irina, who is sitting in the corner. When prompted, touch Irina to receive the Prayer gesture. Talk to Irina once more to accept her into your service, whereby she will teleport to Firelink Shrine. When finished, exit the prison cell through the gate and speak with Eygon once more. He agrees to aid you for now, as long as Irina is safe.

Now you can return to Firelink Shrine to purchase blessings and miracle items from Irina. To locate Irina, go down the staircase to the right of Blacksmith Andre, and continue through the corridor further to the right. Irina sells various Miracle spells and blessings, as well as a Saint’s Ring.

When you collect Braille Divine Tomes on your journey, you can bring these tomes to Irina to upgrade the types of miracles and spells sold in her inventory. However, exercise caution when giving her Deep or Londor Braille Tomes, as these allow Irina to offer Dark Miracles. Irina's overall well being is based on whether you purchase Light or Dark miracle spells, so choose your purchases carefully.
