Dark Souls 3: Profaned Capital - Yhorm the Giant

Explore the Profaned Capital to find Yhorm the Giant.

This walkthrough will help players navigate the Profaned Capital in Dark Souls 3. We will show you where to find valuable loot on the way to the boss encounter with Yhorm the Giant. Depending on your progress, you can even encounter Siegward of Catarina along the way.

To reach the Profaned Capital, you must first explore the corridors of Irithyll Dungeon. There are two routes you can take to reach the Profaned Capital. One is a direct route to the boss, while the other allows you to obtain valuable loot items and encounter Siegward of Catarina. If you have kept up with Siegward’s quests up until this point, we recommend taking the route to find him, in order to progress his story.

Both routes begin at the Profaned Capital Bonfire. Head over to our Irithyll Dungeon Walkthrough if you need help navigating the dungeon to reach this bonfire. We will start by explaining the optional route, where you can obtain valuable items and free Siegward. If you wish to bypass Siegward and the extra loot, skip down to our Direct Route to Yhorm section below to head straight to the boss battle.

Free Siegward, Get the Jailer’s Key Ring

Start at the Profaned Capital Bonfire inside the ruined tower. Go down the ladder near the center of the room, and head through a large hole in the wall off to the side. Drop down to the lower area. The stairs don’t lead anywhere, so head in the other direction toward the wood ramp. Watch out for an attack from another Gargoyle just after you pass the ladder.

Eliminate the Gargoyle and head up the ramp to enter the tower. There’s a Crystal Lizard ahead, but don’t attack it yet. Go through the first doorway on the left, and mind the gaps in the floor. The area below contains toxic sludge and Sewer Centipedes. At the end of the corridor, you’ll find the Crystal Lizard once again and now you can safely attack it to obtain a Twinkling Titanite. The next doorway on the right leads to another Crystal Lizard as well.

Go up the left stairs to find a Rusted Gold Coin. Retrace your steps and go through the opening to reach a higher platform above the pit. Attack the Sewer Centipedes from up here with a ranged attack to eliminate them ahead of time. You’ll be heading down to the toxic sludge shortly. Grab the Blooming Purple Moss Clumps from the corpse on the right, then head down to the toxic sludge.

Once you have cleared out all the Sewer Centipedes from the sludge, go around and collect the items in the muck. Try not to stay in the sludge for too long in order to avoid becoming Toxic. Keep some purple moss clump handy in your quick items in case you become poisoned. You can obtain a Poison Gem and Cursebite Ring from the swamp corpses. On the far side is another Sewer Centipede next to a small island that has a Purging Stone.

Go up the stone ramp ahead of where you found the Purging Stone, and climb the ladder. Curve around the outer corner, drop down to the lower rooftop, then drop down again. This leads you to an open doorway and corridor. Open the doors ahead to discover some hand-like abominations guarding an item. The best way to deal with these monstrosities is to dodge, attack, then back away. Repeat this process until they are dead. You can also lure them outside, climb back up the ladder, and use a ranged attack from the upper rooftop to avoid having to fight in the poison sludge.

Eliminating these abominations rewards you with the Eleonora weapon. Go up the steps at the back of the room to grab the Purging Stones. Afterward, head back out and climb up the ladder once more. Curve around the outer corner, and this time enter the hole in the wall on the higher part of the tower. You’ll find another handy monstrosity inside.

Kill the creature, then destroy the pots in front of the altar to reveal an item corpse that holds a Court Sorcerer Set. Behind the altar is a Mimic chest. Defeat the Mimic to obtain a Court Sorcerer’s Staff. The corpse down the steps on the right only holds some Rubbish. Dropping down from this ledge leads back to the bonfire, but don’t leave just yet. There are still more important items to collect.

Go back outside and continue up the stairs to the right. Watch out for the Unkindled on the rooftop on the right. This enemy wields a two handed magic weapon that has quite a far reach. Dodge his swings, and immediately attack afterward to deal damage and take down this foe to obtain Logan’s Scroll.

The corpse on the right edge of the rooftop holds some Poison Arrows. Drop down the opening into the center of the tower, and pick up the Wrath of Gods miracle spell on top of the altar. This is the same room with the Mimic chest you were in just a moment ago. Head back outside.

Go halfway up the staircase again and get back onto the rooftop where the Unkindled once stood. Jump across to the open window on the adjacent wall across the stairs. Inside, you’ll find Siegward of Catarina locked in a cell. If you explored Irithyll Dungeon earlier and obtained the Old Cell Key, you can now use it to open the cell gate. Speak with Siegward to receive a Titanite Slab and progress his storyline. Pillage the corpse in the corner to obtain a Covetous Gold Serpent Ring, then head back out to the stairs once more.

Continue all the way up the stairs to reach a new section of Irithyll Dungeon. There are two Jailers directly ahead of the doorway, but they are invisible. Attack the nothingness in front of the doorway to reveal the Jailers and fight them if you wish, though you can just ignore them and continue down the hallway instead. Collect the Jailer’s Key Ring at the end of the hall. Use these keys to free Karla from her cell in Irithyll Dungeon, in the room where multiple Jailers patrol.

Backtrack a few steps until you reach a gap in the wall. You will see the room where the Giant rests that you encountered in the dungeon. You can proceed through the dungeon once more if you wish. At this point you have completed the optional area of the Profaned Capital. To return to the bonfire, head back to the room with the altar where you fought the single handy monstrosity. Drop down from the ledge at the back stairs where you found the Rubbish. Climb the ladder on the right to return to the tower that houses the Profaned Capital Bonfire.

Direct Route to Yhorm

This route bypasses the optional items in the Profaned Capital, and instead leads you straight to the boss battle with Yhorm the Giant. If you have been following Siegward’s quests up until this point, we recommend taking the optional route instead in order to pursue his storyline completely. If you just want to reach the boss, then follow along with our steps below.

Starting at the Profaned Capital Bonfire, climb down the nearby ladder that overlooks the bridge. Ahead will be a bridge with yet another Gargoyle patrolling the rocky path. Note the group of Jailer Handmaids further away on the ledge below. These enemies will shoot fireball attacks at you as you cross the bridge, which can be a real pain when fighting the Gargoyle at the same time.

We suggest luring the Gargoyle closer to the ladder so that you can have more space to fight and move around. This will also allow you to dodge fireballs more easily. Defeat the Gargoyle, then proceed across the bridge to collect some Onislayer Greatarrows about halfway down. At the other side of the bridge is a corpse that holds a Large Soul of a Weary Warrior.

Go through the archway and enter the dark corridor that diverges left and right. Down to the left you’ll see a group of Jailer Handmaids facing the wall. There is also another Gargoyle off to the right. Ignore the handmaids, unless you really feel like fighting them. Cut down the Gargoyle, and continue through the corridor. The doorway to the right leads to the group of Jailer Handmaids who were shooting at you along the bridge earlier. To the left is the doorway to the boss.

If you want some extra loot, defeat the handmaids surrounding the flaming altar, and continue along the outer path. There are two Rusted Coins you can pick up: one at the end of the path, and another near a wall to the right.

Return to the large corridor, and continue to the right. You’ll encounter another group of Jailer Handmaids near the far wall. There are about nine of them this time. Also, another Gargoyle waits on the upper right wall, ready to strike when you get too close. Try to lure individual handmaids away from the group by using a ranged attack. When the Gargoyle drops down, kite him further down the corridor away from the group to fight him alone.

After defeating the Jailer Handmaids and the Gargoyle, go collect the loot. The chest on the right contains an Ember. However, the two chests where the handmaids were standing are both Mimics. Defeat both Mimic chests to obtain a Greatshield of Glory and Rusted Gold Coin.

The hallway in the center of the corridor leads to the boss chamber of Yhorm the Giant. If you are ready to take on this goliath, continue onto our boss battle section below.

Boss Battle: Yhorm the Giant

Yhorm the Giant rises from his throne on the far side of the chamber. For this boss fight, you will need a special weapon. Depending on whether you kept up with Siegward’s storyline and freed him from his cell earlier, Siegward will show up at the boss room to help you defeat Yhorm.

You may have noticed that you do very little damage to Yhorm with your weapons, no matter what you use. That’s because you need a special weapon to effectively damage Yhorm. Siegward has one of these weapons, and another is found on the far side of the boss room. If Siegward is there to help, he will do most of the work for you.

If you don’t have Siegward there to help, you will need to obtain your own Storm Ruler weapon instead. Run to the far side of the room and pick up the Storm Ruler from the item corpse in front of the throne. Equipping this weapon during battle can be a bit tricky, since you are likely being attacked by Yhorm at this point. If you are quick enough, you should be able to equip the Storm Ruler in between attacks. The other option is to use a Homeward Bone to quickly exit the boss battle. Equip the weapon and return to the fight.

When you have the Storm Ruler equipped, you’ll need to properly use its stance to be effective against Yhorm. Switch to the two-handed stance by pressing Triangle on PS4 or Y on Xbox One, then use your special attack to charge the Storm Ruler with a surge of wind. You’ll see the wind whirling around the weapon as it charges. When the wind animation does a white burst, be ready to unleash your attack on Yhorm.

Use the charged attack to inflict damage on Yhorm, making sure to be locked on before doing so to ensure you don’t miss. The Storm Ruler takes a few moments to charge up, and the charge attack itself drains most of your stamina. Move to the far end of the room away from Yhorm to prepare your charge attack and land a hit each time.

When Yhorm the Giant reaches nearly half health, he will incorporate more fire attacks to his pattern. Watch out for the fire blasts, and be ready to dodge his regular attacks that occur more frequently. Maintain a safe distance to avoid getting injured and to plan your charge attacks accordingly.

Once Yhorm is defeated you will receive the Cinders of a Lord, as well as the Soul of Yhorm the Giant. If Siegward helped you during the battle, be sure to chat with him after the fight.

Depending on whether you’ve defeated each Lord of Cinder up until now, you may be transported to the High Wall of Lothric immediately after this fight, where you will face off against the Dancer of the Boreal Valley.
