Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City Walkthrough -- How to Beat Judicator Argo

A guide to beating the penultimate boss of the series.

This guide is for fighting one of the final bosses of the Dark Souls series, Judicator Argo, located at the end of the Ringed City. It may be the most difficulty fight in the game, or it may not depending on your circumstances. Here are some tips to overcome it.

Beating Argo's Followers

Unfortunately, there really isn’t any advice that we can make in terms of preparing given the randomness of the battle, but Unbreakable Patches can be summoned from the right side of the doorway as well as other players in front of the fog wall.

This is a classic Souls fight dating back to the Old Monk in Demon’s Souls and the Mirror Knight from Dark Souls 2. After killing Argo in the back of the room, who behaves exactly the same as the other Judicators you fought on your way to this point, he will summon in other players to fight you that are part of the Divine Spears of the Church Covenant. They summon in at staggered times; after draining enough HP from the first summoned player, a second will be brought in before the first is killed. A third will come in when the second is at roughly 50% of HP.

Because of the unpredictability of both other players’ behavior and the fickleness of any internet connection that isn’t yours, this makes for an extremely challenging fight. Invaders in this Covenant are usually equipped with the Ritual Spear Fragment, which is a PvP weapon that conjures a row of spears from the floor for a brief period.

Summoning in two other players balances the fight in your favor as it’s always 3-on-2, but there’s attrition to consider as a fresh enemy will come at different points of the fight as you and your compatriots drain resources. If playing online where other player characters come in to fight you, it is highly advisable for you to summon other players and not Unbreakable Patches, whose AI is not aggressive enough to make him a better option than someone with a controller in their hand.

Taking on the fight in offline mode will summon in three AI-controlled NPCs battle instead of players: a Painting Guardian, a Spear of the Church, and then another Painting Guardian. While this is technically less difficult, remember that you can only summon Unbreakable Patches to help you in this state, shifting the odds back in the game’s favor overall to 2-on-3.

The reward for the fight is a Titanite Slab and a Filianore’s Spear Ornament. This is fight can be reset by finding the Purging Monument and spending an allotment of souls to revive the boss .
