The new year will bring with it a new reason to dive back into the realm of despair and madness. Developer Red Hook Studios announced today that Darkest Dungeon 2 will hit Early Access on the Epic Games Store in 2021.
Teased back in 2019, Darkest Dungeon 2 looks like a faithful follow-up to all the horrors of the original game. Details are scarce to come by right now, though it looks like at least the art style will be keeping true to the first game's memorable aesthetic.
Darkest Dungeon first hit PC in 2016, where it instantly found its fans. Its blend of RPG mechanics, dungeon-crawling, party and sanity management, and general grim demeanor all combined for a pretty compelling dive into the depths of hell. Over the years, the original game has found its way to other platforms, including Nintendo Switch, and it's also seen a host of updates. An April Fools' Joke about Darkest Dungeon PvP even ended up becoming a real mode earlier this year.
As for what Darkest Dungeon 2 may hold, it's unclear. Developers from Red Hook joined us for an Axe of the Blood God episode last March, where they discussed a little about both the original game and the announced sequel.
In 2021, we'll learn more about what the second Darkest Dungeon holds. I'm certainly eager to send a band of naive, hopeful, optimistic adventurers into the catacombs and decrepit halls of monsters. Darkest Dungeon 2 hits Early Access on the Epic Games Store sometime next year.
