Death Stranding Is Officially Done

Time to gather up the social strands and party.

Kojima Productions has officially finished development on... whatever sort of game Death Stranding turns out to be. Today, Hideo Kojima took to Twitter to show off a disc with the approved gold master build of the game and celebrated with the Kojima Production team and friends at Killzone and Horizon Zero Dawn developers Guerrilla, makers of the Decima engine that powers Death Stranding.

In his tweet announcing the milestone, Kojima thanks publisher Sony, Guerrilla, the cast, musicians, artists, and staff that contributed to Death Stranding's development, as well as the studio's fans. Death Stranding will be the first release from Kojima's new studio, formed after the Metal Gear creator left Konami and the original Kojima Productions in late 2015.

Hermen Hulst, co-founder and managing director at Guerrilla, joined in on the celebrations. Kojima announced a partnership with Guerrilla to use the studio's proprietary Decima engine for Death Stranding at the 2016 PlayStation Experience. First used on Guerrilla's Killzone Shadow Fall, a launch title for the PS4, the engine was later used by Guerilla on Horizon Zero Dawn and by Guerrilla's sister studio in Cambridge on RIGS: Mechanized Combat League. Supermassive Games also used Guerrilla's engine on 2015's Until Dawn and the PSVR spin-off Until Dawn: Rush of Blood.

While we've seen a lot more Death Stranding in recent months as its release draws ever closer, a lot of the footage of the game has only raised more questions. Kojima says Death Stranding exists in a new genre of "strand games." What defines the genre? Well, Death Stranding has a thematic and mechanical focus on social connections, perhaps best represented by the Souls-esque online element that puts items and traces left by other players in your game world. That said, Death Stranding is also a game with lots of walking, a peeing mechanic, and babies in pods that are "just equipment" according to one character. If there's a straightforward explanation of what "strand games" are, Kojima and company are letting players discover it themselves.

Death Stranding will launch for the PlayStation 4 on November 8, 2019. If you want to catch up with everything we've learned about the game so far, check out our Death Stranding guide.
