Players in Destiny 2 exploring Mars today might find a new little area. As part of today's update, Bungie has memorialized a former developer who died last year.
Noted in a recent This Week at Bungie update, the Destiny studio added an in-game tribute to honor Matt Helsom, a Vicarious Visions developer who died last year. Helsom worked closely with Bungie during Vicarious Visions' partnership with the studio, and the team wanted to memorialize his contributions to Destiny with an in-game tribute.
After landing on Mars, you'll need to find a certain area and investigate it. After finding it, you can return to Ana for the end of the quest and a reward, as well as a short in-universe tribute to Helsom. You can see the location on the map in the video below, if you're having trouble locating it.
"We wish all of his family, friends, and everyone he impacted during his life the very best," wrote Cozmo, a community manager for Bungie. "Thank you to everyone in the community who joins us in remembering this warm soul."
The recent Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 and 2 remaster also contains a memorial to Helsom, naming a gymnasium after the Vicarious Visions developer. In the comments of that Reddit post, users shared some of his earlier work and remembrances of him.
Video game memorials have been around for some time, both created by developers and held in-game by players. For every one, the comments and remarks about them speak volumes about a person's legacy, and Holsom is no exception. It's touching to see studios and teams, even when removed from their professional relationship with someone, still choose to honor those who left a mark on a game's development after they've passed.
