Bungie Maps Out The Next Several Years of Destiny 2 Content

On top of announcing this year's expansion, Beyond Light, Bungie revealed two more.

Most assumed that today's Bungie stream regarding Destiny 2's future would cover its next major expansion, and it has. We've seen story and gameplay trailers for Beyond Light, the next major release scheduled for September 22, but on top of that, Bungie has revealed names for the next two yearly expansions after that: The Witch Queen in 2021 and Lightfall (a working title) in 2022.

Yes, it seems like Bungie's on track to keep building out Destiny 2 for quite a while rather than looking to start anew as it did in 2017 with the sequel's launch. "We don't want to put another number on the box," said Destiny 2's Director Luke Smith on the Bungie reveal stream. Building out Destiny 2 with additional expansions through at least 2022 will also entail pulling back some of what Bungie has released in the past three years.

"Each year, just as a new expansion comes out, we're going to cycle older, less actively played activity and destination content out of the live game, and into what we're calling the Destiny Content Vault," explained Smith. Bungie will also treat content from the original Destiny as having already gone in the vault, and will be cycling some of that back into Destiny 2, beginning with a spruced-up full return of the Cosmodrome destination.

On top of the Cosmodrome and its three strikes being confirmed for Seasons 12 and 13, Bungie's also promising a return of Destiny's first raid, the Vault of Glass, in an updated form for Destiny 2's Year 4. "I can imagine things like Champion Praetorians instead of just regular Praetorians," Smith teased, "kind of just updating it slightly to the modern context, but still preserving that like-classic feel."

So, Destiny 2 players don't just have Beyond Light, Europa, and the chance to wield the Darkness to look forward to in September. The Witch Queen and Lightfall are certainly very suggestive titles, and the lore fiends out there are surely already updating their theories about Light and Dark or spinning up new ones. "A side should always be taken, even if it's the wrong side," is the line of dialogue accompanying the reveal sting for Lightfall. Maybe there'll be more for Guardians to pick sides about than their character classes come 2022.
