Destiny 2 Warmind Expansion Introduces Ranked Crucible PvP and More: Full Details

Bungie reveals the first big updates coming to the Warmind Expansion.

Bungie will introduce ranked Crucible games and private matches for the third season of Destiny 2. These were announced during today's live Destiny 2 broadcast from Bungie's community manager Chris "Cozmo" Shannon.

Ranked Crucible matches were long-requested features from the Destiny community and it's good to finally see Bungie introduce a new competitive element to the game's meta. This should keep players who enjoy chasing the top ranks busy in a game that could use a boost to its player community.

Likewise, private matches were another long-requested feature by Destiny 2 fans, but were temporarily delayed so that Bungie could rollout 6v6 Iron Banner events. Those were another requested player feature after Destiny 2 launched with a smaller 4v4 PvP mode.

All of this is in anticipation for Destiny 2's next expansion The Warmind which will be out on May 8. That means new maps will be coming to Destiny 2's multiplayer and events playlist. What's more the new Warmind maps will be available for free for all players even if you don't have the expansion.

There are some caveats however. Private matches won't have access to the new multiplayer maps, but it's clear this is a response to instances during the last expansion when some players were locked out of important content if they didn't have the new expansion.

The new updates are also wrapped into major sandbox changes that Bungie hopes will make Legendary weapons more fun to use, and make competitive play more explosive. We listed major changes Destiny 2 needs to win back its fledgling community, and it's good to see Bungie deliver on them.

As for actual expansion content The Warmind will bring with it some kind of horde mode called Escalation Protocol. It will be a public event based in the new Mars area. A new story will center around Clovis Bray, a Weyland-Yutani (from Alien fame) and center around a major new guardian character named Ana Bray.
