Today, Devolver Digital hosted its annual entry in its Direct series, and things got fittingly strange. Alongside the usual surreal, over-the-top cinematic universe Devolver has constructed for itself year over year, there were a few surprise cameos.
PlayStation's Shuhei Yoshida, Xbox's Phil Spencer, Summer Game Fest's Geoff Keighley, and fighting game champ Dominique "SonicFox" McLean were all among the guests. It was a fittingly bizarre framing for the entire convention that I lost the thread on years ago, but that is Devolver.
Of course, there were games present as well. Several announcements, release dates, and teasers took place throughout the show's runtime. Here's a rundown of everything that went down.
Shadow Warrior 3
After a teaser trailer revealed a new Shadow Warrior is on the way, today we got a glimpse of what gameplay looks like. Movement options and executions were the big focus; Wang can jump around the environment, swinging around arenas and pulling environmental hazards into demons. And then when they're damaged enough, Wang can execute a special kill, fairly similar to Doom 2016, but with a little Shadow Warrior attitude. Shadow Warrior 3 is coming in 2021.
There are plenty of battle royales, but few let you bounce and fall through a legion of contraptions. Fall Guys is a Takeshi's Castle-inspired party royale through various obstacle courses until one bouncy, happy contestant is left the victor. It'll be coming to PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam on August 4.
Trapping an alien monster in a lab seems like a bad idea, and Carrion explores the worst-case scenario, from the perspective of the monster. In just a few weeks, players will be able to escape a lab and take out a lot of scientists and guards in the process as a fleshy blob monster. The "reverse-horror" experience Carrion comes to Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch on July 23, and it'll be on Xbox Game Pass as well.
Swords and whips are basic staples for action-platformers, but what about harpoons? Olija is a stylish indie action game centered on a harpoon, where the protagonist can thrust and zip his way around the environment, annihlating enemies with a harpoon. Olija is coming to PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch later this year.
Serious Sam 4
Sam is back, and there are intergalactic invaders that need exploding. I mean, it's Serious Sam. You know it's going to be a lot of running around arenas, fragging aliens, and saving the Earth. It's coming to PC via Steam and Google Stadia sometime next month, August 2020.
In maybe the most unexpected announcement of the show, Devolver unveiled a free first-person… marketing sim? It's called Devolverland Expo, it's set in some kind of digital expo hall for all of Devolver's projects, and it's out for free on Steam today. It looks like it's more than just a walkaround experience though; the trailer showed some puzzles and interactables, so maybe there are some P.T.-style secrets hidden away in the depths of this.
