Devotion Is Not Getting Re-Released on GOG After All [Update]
After the announcement, the PC storefront quickly retracted due to "many messages from gamers."
Update [7:32 a.m. PT]: Not long after this morning's announcement, GOG announced that Devotion would not be coming to the platform. "After receiving many messages from gamers, we have decided not to list the game in our store."
We've reached out to GOG for more clarification. Our original story follows below.
Red Candle Games' Devotion will once again be widely available. After getting pulled from several storefronts last year, Devotion is returning via the GOG digital storefront.
Announced by the developer this morning on Twitter, Red Candle Games says it will be publishing Devotion on the GOG storefront on Dec. 18, 2020. The price will remain the same at $16.99, as will the content of this re-release.
Devotion was pulled from Steam and other storefronts in 2019 over a depiction mocking Chinese president Xi Jinping, which lead to a cascade of negative reviews from irritated Chinese players. Though Taiwanese developer Red Candle Games said the asset in question was a mistake and removed it, the game was still delisted on various digital platforms.
For a time news didn't sound great for Devotion's chances, but the horror game gained a gradual following and critical acclaim, including here at USgamer. Now the game that disappeared will get a second chance on digital storefronts this Friday, and you can bet some folks won't hesitate to grab it before any potential issues resurface.
Aside from Devotion, Red Candle Games has been busy with other projects as well. A new series based on Red Candle's first game, Detention, just hit Netflix, and the studio also confirmed its working on its next project. It seems like even when down, you can't count this group of developers out. For more on Red Candle Games, check out contributor Khee Hoon Chan's profile of the studio from earlier this year.
