Horsepower usually takes precedence in driving games over star power, but Codemasters evidently wants to have both. Today, the developers unveiled Dirt 5 and announced that amongst its assembled voice talent, video game mainstays Troy Baker and Nolan North will play big roles in its new career mode.
Dirt 5's reveal trailer premiered on today's Xbox Series X game showcase stream hosted by Microsoft, adding splashes of color and motor oil to a presentation mostly dominated by games with a darker tone. Pretty off-road cars aside, the environments on display looked particularly inviting, and in a post-reveal interview, Dirt 5's development director Robert Karp revealed that we'll be able to see at least some of those locales in different seasons. You can drive along the frozen East River in New York in winter, or have a different experience in summer.
Karp also announced that Baker and North will play the career mode leads in Dirt 5, playing the nemesis and protagonist respectively. The two performers, both prolific lead actors in games, have collaborated in more than just Uncharted 4—they also host a YouTube gaming Let's Play channel called Retro Replay together.
Dirt 5 will also feature Donut Media, another YouTube channel that'll be instantly familiar to automotive culture fans. Codemasters also promises additional involvement from "more famous names from the automotive world." Maybe we'll get to see Baker trade barbs with some well-known gearheads?
While the footage shown was targeting what Codemasters hopes to deliver on Xbox Series X, Dirt 5's actually making its way to just about every platform. It'll come to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X starting in October (presumably a bit later on next-gen if those systems launch closer to the holidays) and is slated for a Stadia launch in early 2021.
