Disco Elysium's focus on semi-realistic in-game time means that eventually night will roll around and you'll have to rest (even if your mind tortures you with nightmares in the process). We'll show you where to sleep, what it'll cost you, and how you can find a bed for free.
Where to Sleep on Day 1
Your first night's rest is a little bit different to the others, as not only is the Whirling-in-Rags charging you a standard night's fee, but Garte also wants you to pay for the room you trashed - 130 real in total. That's not really plausible in the first day: radioing the precinct only makes them shout at you, Evrart Claire won't give you more than 25 real (and that's a bribe, to boot), and there aren't enough old tare bottles in all of Revachol to pay that kind of money.
Fortunately, Kim will come to the rescue. At roughly 10:00 PM, a speech box will appear above his icon in the bottom-left, indicating he wants to talk. Do so, and he'll ask you what you're going to do about sleep. When you have no good answer, he says the two of you should head back to the Whirling-in-Rags and try to convince Garte to let you stay for free.
Problem is, Garte won't budge. Still, it gives Kim a reluctant idea - he confiscated some wheel spinners off some criminals last week and is grudgingly willing to pawn them to pay off your hotel bill. Take them to the pawn shop and you'll get the money to pay your damages bill to Garte, along with another night's use of the room. Go back and pay him, and you'll have the key again (though he won't clean it up for you). Just click on the messy bed when you're ready to rest and you can sleep.
Where to Sleep After Day 1
From that point on, you can sleep at the Whirling-in-Rags every night by paying 20 real per day to Garte, though you have to pay him before 21:00. You can earn this money by getting the check from Evrart Claire and cashing it in at the Fritte shop by the striking workers, by collecting bottles to cash in, finding change on the ground, or by selling found items to the same pawn shop you gave the spinners in. You can do this every day for the rest of the game, but there is an alternative...
Where to Sleep for Free
On Day 3, when the Fishing Village becomes accessible, you can head there and speak to the elderly Washerwoman. Ask if there's anywhere to stay in the village, and she'll mention the unused shack just to the North of her. Nobody else is using it, so you might as well, she says, as a gesture of goodwill to the police.
Yes, Kim's a little unimpressed with the quality of your lodgings, but it's a free room that also comes with a shaving kit, if you want to get rid of those mutton chops, and a bed and mirror like your room at the Whirling-in-Rags. Accept the key, and from this point on you can simply go to the shack and click on the bed when you want to rest, rather than paying Garte a single penny. Now that you know that, why not check out where to get the full set of T-500 armor right here?
