Disney is Expanding Lucasfilm Games Licensing Division [Update]

LucasArts isn't coming back, but it looks like Lucasfilm is doing something game-related.

Update: A spokesperson has provided further clarification that Lucasfilm Games is not getting back into internal development. These hirings are merely an expansion of the existing teams that handle the game licensing for Lucasfilm brands, as speculated previously. There is no change the existing license partnerships, which Lucasfilm remains committed to.

Previous story: LucasArts has been largely defunct since Disney stopped all game development at the division in 2013. That was followed by the shuttering of Disney Interactive Studios and Disney outsourcing game development as a whole. According to Disney CEO Robert Iger, this is better for the House of the Mouse, despite fans having issues with the handling of the Star Wars property by licensor Electronic Arts.

"We're good at making films and television shows and theme parks and cruise ships and the like, we've just never managed to demonstrate much skill on the publishing side of games," Iger said in a financial briefing with investors.

Well, apparently Disney is changing course slightly. Over the course of this past month, Disney started hiring for new positions in "Lucasfilm Games". These positions look be marketing and production focused at the moment, including Producer, Assistant Producer, Brand Marketing Coordinator, and Brand Art Coordinator.

We're still probably not getting an X-Wing game. | Disney

It sounds like Lucasfilm Games will operation like Marvel Games; not developing any games, but working to ensure game properties are handled properly by outside studios. Some of the listings talk about "internal and external stakeholders," and the Brand Marketing Coordinator posting mentions "multiple Star Wars video game titles on console, PC, and mobile".

The Producer listing calls for "a highly motivated individual responsible for managing the review and approval of interactive products that incorporate Lucasfilm IP, such as Star Wars film and television properties, across all digital platforms, including but not limited to: Mobile (iOS, Android, Windows), Console (Sony Playstation, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo Switch), PC/Mac, and AR/VR platforms."

So Disney's probably not getting back in game development, but it might take a firmer hand on future projects based on its IP. Lucasfilm Games is actually the original name of LucasArts; it was founded under that name in 1982, being renamed in 1990 after reorganization.

Electronic Arts overall has come under fire for releasing only a few Star Wars titles within the six years it's retained an exclusive license. This year will see the release of Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order from Respawn Entertainment, alongside the untitled Star Wars: Episode IX in theaters. An open-world Star Wars title coming from EA Vancouver was cancelled earlier this year, end a project that had started life as a title from the shuttered Visceral Games. USG spoke with former Visceral Games creative director Amy Hennig on that planned game and the issues it had during development.

If you see him around a convention, he's not hard to spot: Black guy, glasses, and a tie.
