Doom Eternal is Ditching SnapMap for Post-Launch Campaign DLC

Less level editors, more post-launch DLC.

Doom Eternal served as the main event at today's QuakeCon 2018 keynote, but more details are coming out for the upcoming Doom sequel, including the fact that Id Software is "absolutely" planning campaign-focused post-launch DLC for Doom Eternal.

During interviews with Polygon and PCGamesN at QuakeCon Doom Eternal director Marty Stratton said that they are planning post-launch DLC for campaign stuff. "Honestly, if there's one thing that I would like to go back and do different is to give people more of the [Doom] campaign post-launch." Stratton says that they're already planning post-launch details and that we'll hear more at a later time.

Replayability is a bit part of the 2016 Doom, with the game a highlight of speed runs at events like Games Done Quick. But at QuakeCon it seems like Doom Eternal is getting even more features that will align well with post-launch DLC. Id is already planning on expanding the narrative universe of Doom, and the post-launch DLC will apparently work with the new Invasion style multiplayer where other players can invade Doom Eternal games as hostile demons.

"It's fun, too, because when we look at doing campaign DLC, and then we [can] have something like Invasion play a part in it, you know, it just, it kind of makes it even more valuable to have that," said Stratton.

Doom Eternal has a fire sword, hell yeah.

One thing that won't be part of Doom Eternal is SnapMap. In Doom 2016 SnapMap let players design basic maps using pre-made assets, but Stratton says that id doesn't "plan on bringing SnapMap back into Doom Eternal" at least for now.

Doom Eternal made a big splash at today's QuakeCon keynote with two new gameplay trailers showcasing new weapons like the grappling hook, and new brutal kills, demons and locations. Doom Eternal is coming out on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
