Dota 2 is releasing a surprise new battle royale-style mode of its own. Called, "The Underhollow," the new mode is available for anyone with an International 2018 Battle Pass coming soon.
Valve describes the Underhollow as a three-person team quest to discover cheese. Need more info? "Battle through a labyrinth filled with monsters, marvels, and many other three-player enemy squads as you search for Roshan's rarest cheese and work to be the last team standing," explains Valve. "You'll need to navigate carefully to earn the XP and Gold needed to destroy your opponents."
There's even a red zone style mechanic in the form of cave-ins that will force players to the center of the Underhollow as Roshan approaches. "Soon enough there will be nowhere left to run."
So yeah, this is pretty much a battle royale mode but with some few twists. Dota 2 joins the battle royale fray along with rumored battle royale modes in games like Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and EA's next Battlefield game. That's of course alongside existing battle royale giants like Fortnite: Battle Royale and PUBG.
Other goodies with the Battle Pass includes access to the Cavern Crawl mode featuring a "cosmically rare Jade Baby Roshan," a Mutation mode, and the reward terrain Emerald Abyss. The latter will be gone forever once The International ends.
Dota 2 recently unveiled Dota Plus, a kind of subscription service geared towards helping new players get a handle on the game. But the International Battle Pass still looks to be where the game's real meat is. You can see more details at dota2.com.
