Driveclub Still Coming in 2014 Despite Evolution Studios' Layoffs

Developers may have lost their jobs, but Sony's still committed to Driveclub coming this year.

Despite recent layoffs at developer Evolution Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment still expects Driveclub to come out some time in 2014. The company released a list of upcoming PlayStation 4 games for 2014 and Driveclub is still there in the "To Be Announced" category. Sony later confirmed the news in a statement to Eurogamer.

"We would like to make it very clear that the development of Driveclub on PS4 is going from strength to strength," a Sony spokesperson said. "The announced studio changes across WWS yesterday have not affected the development of Driveclub or the Driveclub team, which has always had great direction and continues to do so. We have full confidence that the game will deliver on its PS4 promise to be the first truly socially connected racing title and we are very pleased and excited by the caliber of work from Evolution Studios.

"The progress being made on the game is spectacular, so we're looking forward to sharing an update on development, release date and videos of the game in action in the weeks to come. We thank you for your patience and assure you, it will be worth the wait."

Driveclub was intended as a launch title and PlayStation Plus reward for the PlayStation 4, but it was delayed a month before the console's release. Just over two weeks ago, Sony Worldwide Studios America software product development head Scott Rohde said that the game was heading back to the drawing board and he wouldn't commit to a 2014 release.

Third-person action-adventure games are his personal poison: Uncharted, Infamous, and Assassin's Creed just to name a few. If you see him around a convention, he's not hard to spot: Black guy, glasses, and a tie.
