Dynasty Warriors 9 Announced, Series Goes Open World

Koei Tecmo's flagship action series continues with a new entry.

This weekend, Koei Tecmo and Omega Force announced Shin Sangokumusou 8, the game that will be known on Western shores as Dynasty Warriors 9. The game is currently in development in Japan and is expected to be a "rebirth" of the series following the 15th anniversary in 2015. There were no platforms announced, but the game was revealed during a broadcast presented by PlayStation, with Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia president Atsushi Morita showing off the title, so a PlayStation 4 version is likely a lock.

One of the major changes announced was Dynasty Warriors 9 will be open-world this time around. Towns and battlefields are seamless environments and elevation will be key in combat. All 83 characters that appeared in Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires will return in Dynasty Warriors 9.

In an interview with Games Talk (translated via Gematsu), Koei Tecmo explained that all of China will be reproduced in the game in some fashion. Since the terrain is mountainous, certain areas like Hulao Pass and Zhongyuan will be recreated in great detail. Koei Tecmo is sharing experience and technology gained during the development of Toukiden 2, another open-world title by Omega Force, with the development process of Dynasty Warriors 9.

Omega Force is currently working on Dynasty Warriors 9, Toukiden 2, and Musou Stars, a planned crossover Musou title, featuring characters from Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Toukiden, Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, Atelier, and Deception.

Third-person action-adventure games are his personal poison: Uncharted, Infamous, and Assassin's Creed just to name a few. If you see him around a convention, he's not hard to spot: Black guy, glasses, and a tie.
