Following the original announcement, Koei Tecmo has fully revealed Dynasty Warriors 9, with a brand-new English website. The company has also announced that Dynasty Warriors 9 will be getting a Western release eventually, though the game has no confirmed release date, even in Japan.
Dynasty Warriors 9 was originally announced for PlayStation 4 only, but Koei Tecmo has amended that, saying platforms will be revealed at a later date. It will be the first open-world entry in the franchise.
"For the first time in the series, the expansive land of China is shown on a single map with the introduction of an open world format for diverse progression through the game," says the game's official website. "The 'one vs. thousands' exhilarating action of the Warriors series and the beloved characters from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms tale are carried over, but the freedom through an open world stage provides a brand new Warriors experience."
All 83 Dynasty Warriors characters are include in the game, with new costumes. There's also two new characters announced: Cheng Pu, an aged, spear-wielding warrior who has supported the Sun family for three generations, and Zhou Cang, a speedy Shu officer. The site shows off the new looks for Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, and Xiahou Dun.
Players will have to tackle Critical Missions, which drives the story of the game, in addition to Regular Missions and other character requests. Koei Tecmo says the open-world nature of that game adds a strategic element to Dynasty Warriors, allowing players to attack at night or launching a surprise attack from an elevated, unseen position.
And since it's open-world, Koei Tecmo is taking the time to render ancient Chinese landmarks.
"The map is displayed with beautiful graphics and features many different regions of China such as snow plains, jungles and deserts which reflect the passage of time and changing climate. Key cities and checkpoints, such as Luoyang and Hulao Gate, and landmarks such as the Yellow River and Mt. Song, are replicated, allowing for deeper immersion into the game world," says the official website.
