EA Confirms New Battlefield Game, Says Fortnite is Helping Grow EA's Battlefield Audience

So will Battlefield have a battle royale mode?

There's a new Battlefield game coming out this year. We know this thanks to a series of leaks from earlier this year. But today's briefing call for EA's most recent financial quarter, we finally have confirmation that we will see a new Battlefield this year, along with some new details.

The existence of a new Battlefield game this year was practically an open secret with rumors suggesting the new Battlefield will be set in World War 2. Our own reports also suggested that loot boxes will return as a cosmetics-only enterprise. But today's briefing call was the first time we heard about the new Battlefield directly from EA.

A potentially leaked Battlefield 5 screen.

What's more, EA revealed that Battlefield will be the headliner of some kind of competition series, potentially esport-related new venture. This shouldn't surprise anyone considering the growth of the esports business in recent years.

While it was reported that EA is testing a rumored battle royale mode for the new Battlefield, Fortnite's influence might already be influencing EA. According to a conversation with The Wall Street Journal EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said that Fortnite is bringing new players to the shooter genre, a genre EA dominates thanks to Battlefield.

While it doesn't confirm the battle royale mode for Battlefield, it suggests that EA is looking at the new battle royale players potentially coming to Battlefield. So if EA wants to keep these players, introducing a mode they're familiar with might not be a bad idea.
