EA Just Canceled NBA Live Again

The series will ride the bench onto next-gen platforms, it seems.

After several delays, NBA Live has finally been canned for the 2019-2020 season. Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed during a quarterly earnings call today that the virtual basketball franchise would ride the bench this year, as the publisher looked ahead to "leading-edge platforms."

"We've decided not to ship an NBA Live in FY20," Wilson said in prepared remarks. "Instead, we're expanding our vision for NBA Live and continuing to work closely with our NBA Players Association partners on this new project that we'll share more details on next year."

Wilson cited potential on new platforms for NBA Live, and in a comment to Polygon, an EA Sports rep says the delay is not related to development. In prepared remarks to Polygon, Wilson says EA will be "leaning hard into the new leading-edge platforms" for NBA Live.

EA's NBA Live entry for the year had already been backed up once, as the publisher says it was "planning a different approach" to the struggling basketball franchise. Considering NBA 2K20 is has already been on store shelves for some time, it's not hard to see why EA would rather take a breather.

In previews, this year's Live seemed set to fight 2K on its own turf, trying to build up a competitor for the dominant basketball franchise, but it looks like we'll be waiting until the next console generation to see what that looks like. Considering the series' checkered past of cancellations and delays, it's not clear yet just how long that wait will take.
