As I've said before, I enjoyed Star Wars: Battlefront, but my biggest issue was the relative lack of content I felt the game was going to have at launch. My feeling was that Battlefront nailed that basic Star Wars feel and play, but lacked the maps and game modes to keep players entertained for a long time. Today, EA and DICE have announced a series of free and paid additions to the title that should hopefully alleviate the problem.
First up, the free content. The Tatooine Survival now supports Blast, Droid Run, Drop Zone, Hero Hunt, and Heroes vs Villains multiplayer modes. To mark the change, the map now has a new name: Raider Camp. Players can now also create Private Matches, so you can play with friends without having to worry about being matched up with someone random. DICE will also be running Daily Challenges and Community Events to keep the playerbase engaged, allowing users to earn more credits and unlocks. Finally, Luke and Han have new skins for if you play either of those characters on the Hoth map.
DICE is also promising more free content drops in February and March. In February, players will get a new Survival mission on Hoth and a larger Hoth map for Walker Assault, Supremacy, Fighter Squadron and Turning Point. Turning Point is the new 40 player mode pitting Imperials against Rebels for control three points on the map. It was first introduced in the Battle of Jakku DLC in December and the mode will be available on all maps that support Walker Assault and Supremacy. In March, DICE will be adding a new multiplayer on Endor that will support Walker Assault, Supremacy, and Turning Point, as well as a second Tatooine Survival map.
Then there's the content that will be included in $49.99 Season Pass. The release schedule and a brief synopsis of each expansion pack is below:
- Star Wars Battlefront Outer Rim (March 2016) - Fight among the factories of Sullust and battle within Jabba the Hutt's palace on Tatooine
- Star Wars Battlefront Bespin (Summer 2016) - It's hunt or be hunted in this action-packed experience set in the Cloud City of Bespin
- Star Wars Battlefront Death Star (Fall 2016) – That's no moon! One of the most iconic locations in the Star Wars universe makes its debut in Star Wars Battlefront.
- Star Wars Battlefront Expansion Pack 4 – Title TBA (Early 2017) – We will have more details to share about this exciting new expansion pack in the coming months.
That's a solid list of new areas coming to the game, even if another $49.99 is a bit too rich for my blood.
Alongside the additional game mode and two additional maps in the free Battle of Jakku DLC, it sounds like March will be the time for me to get in on some Battlefront action. Assuming the community is strong enough and has stuck around, EA and DICE might have added enough to Battlefront to give it some much-needed longevity. Either way, it's great that EA continues to support its multiplayer shooters with a strong content plan; both Battlefield: Hardline and Battlefield 4 saw a great deal of support in the form of new maps and game modes.
