The Kickstarter for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, the spiritual successor to the beloved Suikoden RPG series, continues to fly along. At the time of this writing, it's raked in $3 million USD. That's more than enough to push it past the "Building the Dream" stretch goal tier, which means we'll be able to recruit 108 characters in Eiyuden Chronicle when it is finally finished.
The 108th hero to join the lineup is a character named Iris. "A gifted and passionate architect, Iris received her education from a prestigious university," states the Kickstarter page for Eiyuden Chronicle. "While a wonderful conversationalist, it's hard to get her to stop when the topic of architecture arises. Iris' inclusion in the game brings the total number of heroes to a magical 108."
108 is a "magical" number in the Suikoden games, which challenge players to find and recruit 108 "Stars of Destiny." Collecting all 108 characters isn't mandatory but doing so often rewards you with bonuses like extra endings.
The inspiration for Suikoden's 108 heroes might come from the 14th century Chinese novel Shui Hu Zhuan, which is sometimes translated as Outlaws of the Marsh or Water Margin. It's a series of tales that follow 108 outlaws who form an army near Mount Liang in eastern China. Suikoden's ragtag heroes likewise form armies and gather in strongholds like Suikoden 2's abandoned castle.
Rabbit & Bear Studios, which is comprised of Suikoden alumni, promises Eiyuden Chronicle will also have a fortress for players to build up. This promise, in addition to the ability to recruit 108 characters, helps Eiyuden Chronicle feel "right" for Suikoden fans.
Ah, but Eiyuden Chronicle will go one step beyond by actually offering 109 characters. "The number 108 is certainly a special number for many people, myself included," said Yoshitaka Murayama, a Suikoden veteran who's leading the project in a recent Kickstarter update. "However, that is a number that holds special value for the Genso Suikoden series and we want to show our respect for what that series means by finding our own number and moving forward to something new."
The newcomer will be chosen via a fan poll that will run for 24 hours in the Eiyuden Chronicle Discord on August 24. Look for concept art throughout the week on Eiyuden Chronicle's social media channels.
We're very much looking forward to Eiyuden Chronicle over on the Axe of the Blood God podcast. I believe Rabbit & Bear Studios has a solid pitch for an epic RPG, and I'm excited to see the final product. For now, there are still 11 days left to the Kickstarter, and a few more stretch goals to meet, including a couple of mystery goals. Let's see if they'll be revealed before the campaign comes to an end.
