Epic Games has purchased Rocket League developer Psyonix. But there's been some confusion about what this means for Rocket League on Steam now that it's been announced for the Epic Games Store. Epic and Psyonix have issued a clarification on the matter, suggesting that plans for Rocket League on Steam aren't finalized yet.

Earlier today, Epic Games announced that it acquired Rocket League developer Psyonix. At the time of the announcement, Epic sent out a press release that read: "The PC version of Rocket League will come to the Epic Games store in late 2019. In the meantime, it will continue to be available for purchase on Steam; thereafter it will continue to be supported on Steam for all existing purchasers."

The statement reads a bit vague as to what will happen to Rocket League on Steam after it arrives on the Epic Games Store later this year. The wording suggests that while it may not be available on Steam, Rocket League would still be supported.

We reached out to Epic Games and Psyonix who have offered this clarification: "We are continuing to sell Rocket League on Steam, and have not announced plans to stop selling the game there." An Epic spokesperson added, "Rocket League remains available for new purchasers on Steam, and long-term plans will be announced in the future."

Furthermore, Epic clarified that support for Rocket League on Steam will continue even after the game is released on the Epic Games Store and players "will still be able to play Rocket League on Steam with all of the content they've previously purchased, same as always."

Epic and Psyonix haven't announced what the "long-term" plans are for Rocket League following its release on the Epic Games Store. For the time-being, Epic says it hasn't announced plans to stop selling Rocket League on Steam. Though clearly, that's subject to decisions made regarding Rocket League's future.

Epic Games has been criticized in the past for its aggressive pursuit of exclusive games, but studio acquisitions are a different matter. It makes sense that Epic will be more protective of its own IP, but it seems like Rocket League's future on Steam isn't so clear-cut. Check out our Rocket League guide for more coverage.
