Fallout 4: Form Ranks - Recruit Eight Settlements

Recruit eight settlements for Garvey.

This guide will show you how to complete Fallout 4: Form Ranks, a Minutemen quest that requires a bit of leg work for people who aren’t a fan of developing settlements. We’ll show you how this mission can go, and what choices need to be made so that things don’t backfire on you. There will be some spoilers in this article if you continue to read, so be warned.

Before this quest becomes available, certain criteria must be met.

  • You were kicked out of the Institute

This can happen by declining Father’s initial invitation to join the Institute (you can say you’ll think about it). Using violence against Institute scientists, or during a conversation with Father during an Institute quest called The Battle for Bunker Hill.

Talk to Preston Garvey about the Institute

This conversation will go one of two ways. If you have recruited less than eight settlements, Preston Garvey will tell you that he believes the Minutemen aren’t strong enough to take on the Institute, and you’ll have to accomplish that task before you can continue. Since most gamers are likely staring at the daunting task of creating more settlements, you can read USgamer’s Fallout 4 Base Building Guide to help make the process easier.

If you have more than eight settlements, Preston Garvey will warn you of an imminent attack on the Castle. This will begin a quest called, Fallout 4: Defend the Castle. Conveniently, this is the next Minuteman quest that you can complete.
