Fallout 4 Looks Better Than Ever on the Xbox One X, but Framerate is Still an Issue

Fallout 4 Looks Better Than Ever on the Xbox One X, but Framerate is Still an Issue

The Xbox One X pushes Fallout 4's graphics to truer 4K, but framerates take a hit.

Fallout 4 received an Xbox One X enhancement upgrade earlier this week. It's similar to an enhancement update that was released for the PlayStation 4 Pro, but thanks to the Xbox One X's massive power, Fallout 4's graphics are pushed to full 4K. Unfortunately it comes at the cost of a stable framerate.

The new Xbox One X enhancements for Fallout 4 pushes the game to render at near 4K resolution. That's compared to the 1440p upscale for the PS4 Pro enhanced version. Our colleagues at Digital Foundry broke down the new graphical powers of the Xbox One X patch in a new video where they break down the new Xbox One X upgrades. All-in-all, they found that Fallout 4 actually has more detailed graphics in both patched and unpatched on the Xbox One X than on the PS4 Pro.

However, where the Xbox One X enhancements manage to outperform in graphics, the advantages end when it comes to stable framerates. The Xbox One X patched version of Fallout 4 consistently dips below 30FPS more frequently than either the PS4 Pro version or the unpatched Xbox One X version.

This is because the Xbox One X enhanced version has more heavy lifting to do with its graphics, but some users feel that none of it is worth it if it causes the framerate to suffer. On Resetera, user Lucifonz writes, "Bethesda please give us options, I'd rather drop the resolution to ensure smoother performance with mods."

Still, Digital Foundry notes that Bethesda is known to continue refining patches even after release. So hopefully we'll see some future improvements to the graphically impressive Xbox One X enhancement patch.
