Fans Should Expect More Favorites to Return for Mortal Kombat 11, Ed Boon Says

There's almost 27 years of Mortal Kombat games to pick from.

Mortal Kombat players rejoiced when fan favorite fighters like Baraka and Skarlet were shown off as returning characters in Mortal Kombat 11. Now a new interview with Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon suggests the upcoming Mortal Kombat could be full of returning faves.

In an interview with Game Informer, Boon was asked about what kind of balance players should expect when it comes to the character roster. The last Mortal Kombat game, Mortal Kombat X, introduced a lot of brand-new characters at the expense of some series staples, but Boon says that will be different in Mortal Kombat 11. "People were pissed when Baraka wasn't in [Mortal Kombat X]. So I think if we had like a needle, it'd lean a little bit more towards servicing those players who want to see their favorite return."

Reception to Baraka and Skarlet's return in Mortal Kombat 11 has been quite positive, and judging by Boon's words there could be a lot of surprise favorites returning in the full roster. It could be a challenge to guess which characters might return though considering there's nearly 27 years of Mortal Kombat history to pick from across 11 main games.

That's also not to say Mortal Kombat 11 will only consist of returning characters. Yesterday NetherRealm Studios introduced two new characters alongside Baraka and Skarlet. The time-controlling fighter Geras and a new "big bad" named Kronika.

Mortal Kombat 11 will feature 25 playable characters based on the character select screen we saw at yesterday's reveal. That's also not including any number of possible future DLC fighters. With Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Shao Kahn, and Sonya Blade already confirmed that leaves 14 characters left to be revealed.

Mortal Kombat 11 is coming to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 23. Check out our Mortal Kombat 11 news round-up from yesterday's reveal event, and our Mortal Kombat 11 everything we know guide for the latest news, trailers, and more.
