Bandai Namco, Capcom, and More Will Host Fighting Game Roundtable This Friday

Expect news from at least two of the devs present.

It's been a long summer of video game news and announcements, but fairly quiet on the fighting game front. Those holding out for more news won't have to wait too much longer though, as a new stream has been announced for this Friday, featuring just about every major fighting game studio in Japan.

Announced in a press release today, Bandai Namco Entertainment will host a roundtable discussion about the "past, present, and future of the fighting game and esports industry." It's a surprisingly large gathering, and it'll take place on Bandai Namco's Twitch channel this Friday, July 31, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.

The lineup of companies participating includes:

  • Arc System Works (Guilty Gear, Dragon Ball FighterZ)
  • ARIKA (Fighting EX Layer)
  • Bandai Namco (Tekken, Soulcalibur)
  • Capcom (Street Fighter)
  • Koei Tecmo (Dead or Alive)
  • SNK (The King of Fighters)

Bandai Namco has already confirmed that Tekken 7 producer Katsuhiro Harada and Soulcalibur 6 producer Motohiro Okubo will be participating on behalf of the company. They will have announcements to share about each title as well.

While we don't know too much else about this event just yet, it's easy to guess that—given the timing—this is where any planned Evo announcements for 2020 would have gone. Even before Evo Online's cancellation in the wake of allegations made against former president Joey Cuellar, several companies including Capcom and Bandai Namco pulled out of the event.

In keeping with the four months of video game news, this roundtable seems like a good venue to make any announcements previously being held for Evo Online. But apart from some updates to my favorite games, I'm also looking forward to the discussion; getting to see the guiding minds behind many major fighting game franchises gathered around a table, talking over major topics in the scene will be fascinating. Please, oh please, someone ask them about rollback netcode.
