Final Fantasy 14 director and producer Naoki Yoshida is working on a "next generation" video game project at Square Enix in the new 3rd Development Headquarters. Yoshida announced that the project is already moving past pre-production and into large-scale development.
Yoshida previously led the 5th Business Division as producer and director of Square Enix's MMORPG Final Fantasy 14. He's now heading the newly launched 3rd Development Division, and is currently seeking new employees and developers to work on the unannounced project.
In a message, Yoshida says that this is a new "key project" following Final Fantasy 14. "This project has already finished early development, as well as presentation of development environment, and is now moving into the full-blown, large-scale development phase. The new project is seeking developers who want to deliver both 'fun' and 'enjoyment' to the world, as well as 'surprise.'"
Considering Yoshida's pedigree, the fact that this is a "core" Square Enix project, and the end of Final Fantasy 15's development, Final Fantasy 16 seems like an easy guess as Yoshida's next project. But of course, without any confirmation this is just guess work.
Yoshida is famous for turning around the troubled Final Fantasy 14 MMO with the reboot FF14: A Realm Reborn. The herculean task essentially turned Square Enix's panned and floundering MMORPG into a critically-acclaimed hit, which is no small task as evinced by this NoClip documentary on the game.
I'm looking forward to seeing how Yoshida will be able to channel his talents on a new major project, whether it's the next Final Fantasy or something else entirely. Meanwhile, the next Final Fantasy 14 expansion is called Shadowbringers and will be launching this summer. Check out our Shadowbringers guide for more coverage.
