Final Fantasy 14 Players In China Are Fighting Their Hardest Raid Yet: A KFC Family Meal

That's a lot of chicken for one chocobo.

Players are blasting through the new content in Final Fantasy 14's Shadowbringers expansion, but in China, there's a different struggle going on. A current promotion awards a special Black Fat Chocobo to people who buy a KFC family package, and it's led to players speedrunning a grueling amount of deep-fried chicken to get it.

Reddit user /u/Cozywolf translated and broke down the promotion on the game's subreddit. While the deal is now unlimited, it was originally a 300,000 limited offering, so players in China were trying to take it on with only a few people.

What makes up this meal? One double chicken burger, one vegan mushroom burger (shudder), one five-piece chicken nuggets, two original recipe chicken pieces, one two-piece New Orleans chicken wings, an Old Beijing spicy duck roll, two large Pepsi drinks, and two large peach oolong teas. That's a lot of food.

You might wonder why they don't just buy the food and toss it. Well, apparently one of the stipulations to get the code is that you have to dine in, and you have to finish it all. Add on that you only get one code for it, so multiple runs are needed to get everyone in your party a code, and it's starting to sound a lot like an actual raid.

Players are sharing memes and posting strategies, discussing the best way to work through the veritable mountain of food in front of them in hopes of their own Fat Chocobo. Walkthroughs even discuss which food should be taken on first, and one player even shared a heartbreaking story of going to the restroom and having their meal taken away and then given a new one. Their Sisyphean commitment is inspiring.

The vegan mushroom burger has a nickname among the community, by the way: the Morbol burger, or "a French kiss with Morbol." A Morbol is a nasty mob in Final Fantasy 14 with an odious stench and negative status effects.

Final Fantasy 14's new Shadowbringers expansion is a pretty solid addition to the MMO. Outside of its healer problems, the game seems to be in a great state right now, which is more than you can say for folks who solo this KFC challenge.
