After years of focus on both the remake of Final Fantasy 7 and building out the world of Final Fantasy 14, Square Enix debuted a first look today at the sixteenth installment of the Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy 16 is coming to the PlayStation 5, and like others before it, it seems like a fascinating new world to explore.
Final Fantasy 16 has more of a medieval vibe this time around. It definitely looks to be capturing the fast-paced action of the last numbered entry in the series.
Still, this was one fascinating game to open the PlayStation 5 games presentation with, and arguably more surprising is the fact that it's a console exclusive for the PS5. There's still a whole lot we don't know about Final Fantasy 16 now, but I can't wait.
This is the first new numbered installment in the series since 2016's Final Fantasy 15, a divisive entry that had a gradual rollout of content for a few years after launch. Most Final Fantasy discussion centered around the segmented remake of Final Fantasy 7, the first installment of which finally landed this year, or the continuing redemption arc of Final Fantasy 14.
Both have been great for different reasons, but it's hard to deny the exciting feeling of seeing a brand new Final Fantasy. This is a new world, promising a new story and cast of characters to explore, and all of it on the next generation of console hardware.
