Final Fantasy 7 Remake Designer Teases Aerith's New "Untold" Backstory

"We actually reveal quite a major untold part of her past."

Aerith Gainsborough had a bit of a mysterious past in the original Final Fantasy 7. In the upcoming remake, one designer has teased that we'll see new parts of her "untold past" for the first time.

In the second episode of the 'Inside Final Fantasy 7 Remake' mini documentary series from Square Enix, co-director of scenario design Motomu Toriyami spoke briefly about Aerith. "In [Final Fantasy 7 Remake], we actually reveal quite a major untold part of her past," he said. "You might not even catch it at all."

What Toriyami means by this is anyone's guess. The developers take care not to spoil Aerith's past for newcomers to the remake (and we won't spoil anything here), but the idea of Aerith having a more fleshed out backstory in Final Fantasy 7 Remake is certainly an intriguing idea.

The second episode of this documentary series focused on the characters and story of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Kazushige Nojima, who planned the story and script of both the original game and the remake, teases a "sweet" scene between Tifa and Cloud, where the former shows the latter a Japanese-style apartment in Midgar. It's another new addition to the remake that didn't feature in the original.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be released for PS4 on April 10, 2020. There's now just over two weeks to go until we can get our hands on one of the most anticipated games in recent memory. Square Enix just recently warned of possible physical shortages of the remake in certain areas around the world, promising to share additional updates closer to launch next month.
