It's not exactly a secret that Final Fantasy 7 Remake has sold well. But new analysis from the US NPD group give us a new insight into exactly how well the remake has sold, in the context of the entire history of Final Fantasy.
You can see a recap of the NPD reporting from games industry analyst Mat Piscatella just below. In the video, Piscatella reports that Final Fantasy 7 Remake had the best launch month in the history of the series, beating out the opening monthly revenue of Final Fantasy 15, which held the previous franchise record. For some context, Final Fantasy 15 is the sixth best-selling game in the franchise overall, coming in just behind Final Fantasy 8 (the original Final Fantasy 7 reigns supreme with 13.2 million lifetime sales).
According to the NPDs report, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is the best-selling PS4 exclusive game of 2020 so far (it hasn't exactly been up against stiff competition). Additionally, it's now the third-best selling game of 2020 so far across all platforms.
Last we heard in April, Final Fantasy 7 Remake had sold 3.5 million copies in just three days on the market after it launched on April 10. Later that month, it was reported that after three weeks on sale in Japan, the remake was outpacing sales of Final Fantasy 15.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake has a long road to go if it wants to beat 15's lifetime sales, though. As of December 2019, roughly three years after its initial launch, Final Fantasy 15 had sold 8.9 million copies worldwide.
