Fortnite and PUBG are Going to Court in Korea Over Copyright Violation

PUBG Corp. and Epic Korea are taking it to court.

PUBG Corp. the developers of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and subsidiary of Bluehole, filed a copyright violation lawsuit against Epic Games over whether or not Epic's Fortnite Battle Royale copied aspects from PUBG.

According to the Korea Times, a PUBG representative said that the company filed an injunction in January alleging copyright infringement in the Seoul Central District Court against Epic Games Korea.

PUBG Corp. first said it was "concerned" aspects of PUBG were being replicated by Fortnite back in in September. It was two months after Fortnite added a Battle Royale mode to its building survival-sim.

PUBG Corp. CEO C.H. Kim also lamented Fortnite's entry into the battle royale genre by highlighting the relationship between Epic Games and PUBG Corp. as PUBG runs on Epic's Unreal Engine.

PUBG Corp. is worried that Fortnite may have core UI elements that are similar to those in PUBG.

PUBG has sold more than 40 million copies on Steam since last year, but Epic's own Fortnite has capture the attention of the mainstream. Hip hop stars like Drake have even livestreamed themselves playing Fortnite to huge audiences.

According to Korea Times, Fortnite is prepping an entry into the Korean market thanks to a partnership with Neowiz Games made in January.
